Pokémon Origins is a special Japanese anime series. In Japan, it is known as Pocket Monsters: The Origin (ポケットモンスター THE ORIGIN, Poketto Monsutā Ji Orijin). It is based on Nintendo's popular Pokémon games.
This miniseries is different from the main TV show. It follows the story and characters from the very first Red and Blue video games. It also stays very true to how the games work.
Pokémon Origins was made by several animation studios. These include Production I.G, Xebec, and OLM, Inc.. The special is split into four parts. Each part was directed by a different person from these studios. It first aired in Japan on TV Tokyo on October 2, 2013. This was just before the X and Y video games came out.

Episode 1: Red's Journey Begins
In the first episode, we meet two young Pokémon trainers, Red and Blue. Professor Oak calls them to his lab. He gives them a Pokédex, a special device to record Pokémon information. Their mission is to find and record data on all Pokémon in the Kanto region.
Professor Oak also gives them their first Pokémon partners. Red chooses a Charmander, a Fire-type Pokémon. Blue picks a Squirtle, a Water-type Pokémon. Red starts his journey, battling wild Pokémon and catching new ones. He works hard to fill his Pokédex.
Red soon battles Blue, but Blue's Squirtle is too strong. Red feels sad after losing. He then meets a kind man who teaches him about the special bond between trainers and their Pokémon. This man tells Red to go to Viridian City to heal his Pokémon.
Later, Red arrives at the Pewter City Gym. He finds out the man he met earlier is the Gym Leader, Brock! Brock challenges Red to a Gym battle. Red learns that his Fire-type Charmander is not good against Brock's Rock-type Geodude. But Red's Nidoran♂ manages to defeat Geodude.
Brock then sends out his powerful Onix. Onix defeats most of Red's Pokémon. Remembering what he learned about trainer-Pokémon bonds, Red uses his Charmander again. This time, Charmander defeats Onix! Red earns his first Gym Badge, the Boulder Badge.
Episode 2: The Ghost of Pokémon Tower
After winning two more Gym Badges, Red arrives in Lavender Town. He hears stories about ghosts in the Pokémon Tower, a place where Pokémon are laid to rest. Before going to the tower, Red visits a shelter for Pokémon.
There, he meets a girl named Reina and a sad Cubone. Cubone's mother, a Marowak, was hurt by the bad guys from Team Rocket. Red learns that the shelter's owner, Mr. Fuji, went to the Pokémon Tower alone. Team Rocket has taken over the tower.
Red decides to go to the tower to find Mr. Fuji. Blue, who overhears Red, also goes. Inside the tower, they both see a ghost! Blue gets a special item called a Silph Scope from Team Rocket. This item shows that the ghost is Cubone's mother.
Cubone runs into the tower and reunites with its mother's spirit. This allows her spirit to finally rest in peace. Red and Cubone then work together to drive out Team Rocket and save Mr. Fuji. As a thank you, Mr. Fuji gives Red a Pokéflute and some mysterious stones. Red then continues his journey.
Episode 3: Facing Giovanni
Red earns two more Gym Badges, and his Charmander evolves into a powerful Charizard. Red and Blue meet a person from the Silph Company. Team Rocket has taken over this company. They want to get the Master Ball, a special Poké Ball that can catch any Pokémon easily.
Red sneaks into the Silph Company building. He frees all the scientists and Pokémon that Team Rocket had trapped. As a thank you, he receives a Lapras. Red then faces Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket. Giovanni defeats Red with his Nidoqueen and escapes.
Red continues his journey and earns more badges. He arrives in Viridian City and finds out that the final Gym Leader is Giovanni himself! Giovanni starts the battle with his Rhyhorn. Rhyhorn easily defeats most of Red's Pokémon. But Red's Hitmonlee manages to knock out two of Giovanni's Pokémon at once.
Red then sends out his Charizard to battle Giovanni's Rhydon. Charizard wins the tough battle! Giovanni respects Red's strength. He decides to stop Team Rocket's bad deeds. Giovanni then gives Red the final Gym Badge. This badge allows Red to enter the Pokémon League.
Episode 4: Champion and Beyond
Red finally reaches the Pokémon League at the Indigo Plateau. He battles and defeats the powerful Elite Four trainers. But he finds out that Blue has already become the Pokémon League Champion! To become champion himself, Red challenges Blue to a final battle.
The battle comes down to a fight between Red's Charizard and Blue's Blastoise. Charizard wins, making Red the new Pokémon League Champion! Professor Oak visits them and records Red and his Pokémon in the history of champions.
After this, Red continues his journey. He manages to catch all 149 known Pokémon! When he returns home, he learns that Blue was badly defeated by a mysterious Pokémon. This Pokémon was not one that Red had seen before. Red remembers a diary he found on his travels. He figures out this Pokémon must be Mewtwo, a Pokémon created by science.
Professor Oak gives Red advice about the mysterious stones Mr. Fuji gave him earlier. Red goes to face Mewtwo, finding it incredibly strong. Red and Charizard are determined not to give up. The stones they have, which are actually Mega Stones, start to glow!
This causes Charizard to undergo a Mega Evolution, turning into Mega Charizard X! With this new power, they defeat and capture Mewtwo. Red then realizes there is still one more Pokémon, Mew, to find. He becomes even more determined to complete his Pokédex!
