Pondera County (pronounced POND-ə-RAY) is a county located in the state of Montana in the United States. It was named after the Pend d'Oreilles people, a Native American tribe. The county was created on April 1, 1919.
As of the 2020 census, about 5,898 people lived in Pondera County. The main town and county seat (the place where the county government is located) is Conrad.

Pondera County covers a total area of about 1,640 square miles (4,248 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1,623 square miles (4,203 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 17 square miles (44 square kilometers), is water.

Protected Natural Areas
Part of the famous Lewis and Clark National Forest is found in Pondera County. This forest is a large area of protected land with trees, mountains, and wildlife. Also, a part of the Rocky Mountain Front Conservation Area is located here. This area helps protect the amazing natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
People of Pondera County
The number of people living in Pondera County has changed over the years. In 1920, there were 5,741 people. The population grew to 7,653 in 1960 before slowly decreasing. In 2020, the population was 5,898.
Who Lives Here?
According to the 2010 census, most people living in Pondera County were white (82.7%). A significant number of residents were also American Indian (14.5%). People from other backgrounds, including Asian, Black, and those of two or more races, also live in the county. About 1.4% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Many families live in Pondera County. In 2010, about 30% of households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 2.41 people.
