About ¿Por Qué No?
The name "¿Por Qué No?" means "Why not?" in Spanish. Bryan Steelman, the owner, was inspired to open the restaurants after visiting small, local eateries in Mexico.
There are two locations in Portland. The first one is in the Boise neighborhood of north Portland. The second restaurant is in the Hawthorne District in southeast Portland. Both places are very popular. You might see long lines, especially when the weather is nice or during "Taco Tuesdays"!
What's on the Menu?
¿Por Qué No? is famous for its Mexican-style tacos. The recipes come from different parts of Mexico. The restaurant uses fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. For example, they use fish caught in a sustainable way. Their pork comes from a farm in Oregon. The tortillas are made by hand right at the restaurant!
You can find many taco fillings, like barbacoa (slow-cooked meat), calamari (squid), and carne asada (grilled beef). Besides tacos, they offer larger meals. These include enchiladas, quesadillas, and tamale plates. They also have rice bowls and salads.
For drinks, they serve margaritas and aguas frescas. Aguas frescas are refreshing drinks made with fruit. They also have special popsicles called SolPops, which are made with whole fruit.
Restaurant History
In 2009, the original north Portland location got a grant. This money helped them build a "green" outdoor patio. This patio has plants on the roof, called a green roof. It also has solar panels to heat water. This project was finished in 2010.
In 2013, the same restaurant closed for two months. It was being expanded and updated. They added more seating and another bathroom. The house above the restaurant was turned into a kitchen for catering.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant received some support. This help allowed them to keep their employees working. It showed their commitment to their team.
Community Involvement
¿Por Qué No? is a restaurant that cares about its community. They have helped many charities and fundraising events. For example, they supported Raphael House, which helps families in need. They also helped "Sisters of the Road," an organization that supports people experiencing homelessness.
The restaurant has also taken part in community discussions. In 2013, they supported a plan to give employees paid sick leave. The owner, Bryan Steelman, believed that good benefits make employees feel more confident. He said this helps create a stronger team at work. In 2014, they supported a measure to allow more people to get driver's cards. This showed their support for all community members.
