Powell is a small town in DeKalb County, Alabama, in the United States. In 2020, about 901 people lived there. Powell is special because it sits on top of a place called Sand Mountain.

The town was first started in the 1960s and was called Powell's Crossroads. Later, by the 1990s, its name was made shorter to just Powell.

A college called Northeast Alabama Community College is located very close to the northwest edge of the town.

Where is Powell Located?

Powell is found at a specific spot on the map: 34.533483 degrees North and 85.894598 degrees West. The town stretches all the way to the border of Jackson County in the northwest. It also shares a border with the city of Rainsville to the southeast. Another town, Section, is located just across the county line to the northwest.

A main road, Alabama State Route 35, goes through Powell. If you go northwest on this road, you'll reach Scottsboro in about 15 miles. If you go southeast through Rainsville, you'll get to Fort Payne in about 13 miles. Fort Payne is the main city for DeKalb County.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that Powell covers a total area of about 12.9 square kilometers (or 4.98 square miles), and all of it is land.
