Premendra Mitra (born September 4, 1904 – died May 3, 1988) was a famous Indian writer. He wrote poems, stories, and even directed movies in the Bengali language. He was also one of the first writers to create Bengali science fiction stories. Premendra Mitra believed that for people to get along, they needed to "forget their differences and be united."

Early Life and Family
Premendra Mitra was born on September 4, 1904, in Varanasi, India. His family's old home was in Rajpur, West Bengal. He came from a well-known family in Konnagar. His father was Gyanendranath Mitra, and his mother was Suhasini Debi. Sadly, he lost his mother when he was very young.
Journey Through Life
Because his father worked for the Indian Railways, Premendra Mitra traveled to many places in India as a child. After his mother passed away, his grandparents raised him in Uttar Pradesh. Later, he lived in Kolkata and Dhaka.
He went to South Suburban School (Main) and started college at Scottish Church College in Kolkata. However, he left college early to study farming in Santiniketan. This was with Leonard Elmhirst, a friend of the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. Farming wasn't for him, so he went back to studying in Dhaka and then at Asutosh College in Kolkata. There, he helped with research for Dinesh Chandra Sen.
Premendra Mitra became very well-known for creating the character of GhanaDa. This character is like an older brother (Ghana means 'Elder brother' in Bengali) who has amazing adventures.

Premendra Mitra created several memorable characters who starred in many of his stories.
Ghanada
Ghanada (whose real name is Ghanashyam Das) is a middle-aged man who lives in a shared house in Kolkata. He tells amazing stories about his thrilling adventures all over the world, and even on Mars! He claims to have faced many dangers and solved many mysteries. The first Ghanada story, Mosha (The Mosquito), was published in 1945.
Mamababu
Mamababu (meaning 'Maternal Uncle') is another adventurous character. He lived in Burma for his job. His exciting trips are told in many novels and short stories, such as:

- Dryagoner Nishwas (The Breath of the Dragon)
This character later inspired another famous Bengali detective series called Kakababu.
Parashor Barma
Parashor Barma is a detective who also loves to write poetry. The first story about him, Goyenda Kobi Parashor (Detective Poet Parashor), came out in 1932. Some of his other cases include:

- Path Bendhe Dilo (The Way Is Closed) in 1945
- Notun Khobor (New News) in 1947
- Kuasha (The Fog) in 1949, based on his own novel.
- Hanabari (The Haunted House) in 1952, a mystery film he also produced.
- Chupi Chupi Aashey (Silently He Comes) in 1960.

He wrote stories, screenplays, and lyrics for other movies too:
- Bhabikaal (The Future) in 1945
- Avijog (The Complain) in 1947
- Ora Thake Odhare (They Live That Side) in 1954. This was a funny movie about the differences between people from different parts of Bengal. It starred famous actors like Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen.
