Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection (プリティーリズム・オールスターセレクション, Puritī Rizumu Ōru Sutā Serekushon) is a fun Japanese project from 2014. It was made by Tatsunoko Production and Avex Pictures, with help from Takara Tomy and Syn Sophia. This project is part of the popular Pretty Rhythm series. It's the fourth animated show in the series.
The story is about "Prism Stars." These are like Japanese idols who combine singing, dancing, fashion, and Figure skating into amazing performances. Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection brings together the best parts of the first three Pretty Rhythm animated shows. These are Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream, Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future, and Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live.
This project also introduces a new character named Laala Manaka. She is the main character of Pretty Rhythm's spin-off series, PriPara. The Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection project includes an tie-in arcade game, an animated movie, a manga comic series, and a TV anime show.
About the Project
The Movie
The movie, Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection: Prism Show Best Ten, was first announced in December 2013. It came out in theaters across Japan on March 8, 2014. Tatsunoko Production and 10 Gauge worked together to animate the film. Deko Akao wrote the story for the movie.
As a special gift, people who watched the movie got a "Prism Stone." You could use this stone with the Pretty Rhythm arcade games. The music group Prizmmy also performed at some of the movie showings.
The film shows the top 10 performances from the Pretty Rhythm anime series. Characters from Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream, Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future, and Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live all appear. Before the movie came out, it was hinted that a new character would be in it. Laala Manaka's identity was a secret until the movie was released.
The Game
On April 17, 2014, the Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live Duo arcade game got a new name. It became Pretty Rhythm: All Star Legend Coord Edition (プリティーリズムオールスターレジェンドコーデ編). This new version came with 84 new "Prism Stones" to collect and use.
This was the very last game in the Pretty Rhythm arcade game series. Its services ended in July 2014.
The Manga
A manga comic book version of Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection was also made. Michiyo Kikuta drew the pictures for it. The manga started being published in the April 2014 issue of Pucchigumi magazine.
The Anime TV Show
The Pretty Rhythm: All Star Selection TV show started on April 5, 2014. It aired on TV Tokyo every Saturday morning at 10 AM. The show finished on June 14, 2014.
This TV series is a collection of popular episodes from the earlier Pretty Rhythm shows. It includes episodes from Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream, Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future, and Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live. Before each episode, there's a short new animated part. In these parts, Aira Harune, Mia Ageha, and Naru Ayase give advice to Laala Manaka. Laala is a new aspiring Japanese idol and the main character of PriPara. They teach her how to shine on stage!
