Pretty Rhythm (プリティーリズム, Puritī Rizumu) is a super fun Japanese series of games, TV shows, and more! It was created by Syn Sophia and Takara Tomy especially for girls.
The Pretty Rhythm world first opened in July 2010 with an arcade game called Pretty Rhythm: Mini Skirt. It was a rhythm and dress-up game where you could dance and pick cool outfits. After the original Pretty Rhythm games stopped in 2014, Takara Tomy started a new series called PriPara. Then came Kiratto Pri☆Chan in 2018. All these series together are now known as the Pretty Series (プリティーシリーズ, Puritī Shirīzu). There's even a spin-off called King of Prism that started in 2016, which focuses on the boy characters from the Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live anime. This one is popular with older girl fans!
Because the series became so popular, it led to many anime TV shows and manga comics. The Pretty Rhythm world also inspired a real-life fashion brand for kids called Prism Stone. In 2012, one of their fashion shows even set a Guinness World Records for having the most models walk on a catwalk!

The Pretty Rhythm games are all about "Prism Stars." These are like idols who perform amazing figure skating routines with singing and dancing. They do special moves called "Prism Jumps"!
The characters take part in "Prism Shows," which are live performances. You get points based on how much the audience loves your show. The game is a rhythm game, so you need to press buttons at the right time to match the beat of the song. You'll see pink and blue hearts on the screen, and you press the buttons when they line up.
It usually costs ¥100 (about $1) to play by yourself. If you want to play with a friend in "Duo Mode," it costs ¥200 (about $2).
Each game machine works with "Prism Stones." These are small, heart-shaped gems you can collect. Each stone has a special outfit or item for your character in the game. You can also use "Memory Passes" to save your game progress. You can use up to five different Prism Stones at once to create unique outfits. Some outfits and stage choices even give you bonus points! You usually get a new Prism Stone from the machine before you start playing.
The First Game: Pretty Rhythm: Mini Skirt
Pretty Rhythm: Mini Skirt was the very first game. It came out in arcades on July 15, 2010. When it first launched, there were 84 different Prism Stones, which meant you could make about 200,000 different outfits! The game also had a song called "Mini Skirt no Yosei" that you could play. It was sung by a group called Mini Skirt, made up of young trainees from AKB48.
Later updates, like the "Fall Collection" in October 2010 and "Collection Season 3" in January 2011, added more fun. For a short time, the Mini Skirt group even had a special stage in the game where you could win a Prism Stone with their uniforms!
New Versions: Aurora Dream and Dear My Future
The game got a big update and was renamed Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream on April 28, 2011. This happened at the same time as the anime TV show started! A new character, Aira Harune, became playable. This version also added a "Surprise Jump" system. More updates followed, adding new songs and characters like Mion Takamine.
Then came Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future on April 26, 2012. This was also a tie-in with its own anime show. It added new characters like Mia Ageha and her friends, who were based on the real-life girl group Prizmmy. This game introduced "Prism Acts," which were new special moves. Later, characters based on the girl group Puretty were also added.
Rainbow Live and Rainbow Live Duo
Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live launched on April 18, 2013. This was a brand new series with its own anime. It brought in a cool new feature called "Prism Live." In this mode, your character could enter a special bonus round to earn even more points with amazing Prism Jump combinations. "Pair Friends" were also added to help you in the game.
The first update, "Prism Live Debut Edition," added new playable characters like Naru Ayase, Ann Fukuhara, Ito Suzuno, and Rinne. The next update, "All Rare! Ki-ra-me-ki Days Edition," added Bell Renjoji, Otoha Takanashi, and Wakana Morizono.
Later, the game was renamed Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live Duo in October 2013. This update added June Amou as a playable character and a fun two-player mode called "Duo Mode." You and a friend could perform Prism Lives together! The "Surprise! Winter White Edition" update in January 2014 even let you play with Starn as a Pair Friend.
The Final Arcade Game: All Star Legend Coord Edition
On April 17, 2014, the arcade game was updated one last time and called Pretty Rhythm: All Star Legend Coord Edition. It came with 84 new Prism Stones. The Pretty Rhythm arcade games officially stopped running in July 2014. A few machines stayed in special Prism Stone shops in places like Harajuku and Sapporo. Even though the games are no longer made, your old Memory Passes and Prism Stones still work!
Other Pretty Rhythm Games
There were also Pretty Rhythm games for the Nintendo 3DS.
- Pretty Rhythm: My Deco Rainbow Wedding came out on March 20, 2013. It was like a portable version of Mini Skirt and included characters from Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream and Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future. You could even unlock QR codes for new outfits to use in the arcade game!
- Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live: Kirakira My Design was released on November 28, 2013, also for the Nintendo 3DS. It featured characters from Rainbow Live and a new character named Cosmo Hojo.

A smartphone app game called Pretty Rhythm Shake was released on March 7, 2015, for Android and iOS phones. It was a rhythm game where you matched falling hearts to the beat. You could use virtual Prism Stones to level up your characters. This game mainly focused on the characters from Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live, but you could unlock characters and songs from Aurora Dream and Dear My Future too. Sadly, this game stopped running on May 31, 2017.

Prism Stone Shops

Prism Stone is a special store that appears in all the Pretty Rhythm series. Real-life Prism Stone shops opened to go along with the Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream anime. The first main store opened in Yokohama in April 2011, which is where the Aurora Dream story takes place!
These stores sell cool character items and also a line of junior apparel (clothes for kids and teens) with "lovely" and "pop" styles. In 2014, Prism Stone even worked with another brand called DreamV
to create a clothing line. They also sold clothes from other popular junior brands like Roni and EarthMagic, which had special Prism Stones for the arcade games. On March 30, 2012, the Pretty Rhythm team held a big event called Pretty Girls Dream Challenge 2012 in Yokohama. A huge number of child models, 1,274 of them, walked the catwalk! This event actually set a Guinness World Records for having the most models in a fashion show.
When Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live came out, a new Prism Stone store opened in Harajuku in 2013, since that's where Rainbow Live is set. This store became the main Pretty Series shop after the Yokohama store closed in 2016.
Dear Crown Shops
In 2012, another fashion shop called Dear Crown opened its first store in Odaiba. This was a tie-in with Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future. Dear Crown was like a sister brand to Prism Stone, but it focused on "cool" designs for junior clothing. In the anime, characters who were rivals to the main heroes, like Puretty and Bell Rose, were often linked to Dear Crown.
Dear Crown shops closed in 2014 after Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live ended. But it reopened in 2015 when the brand was shown in the PriPara series! However, Dear Crown closed again in 2016, and now all its products are sold through Prism Stone shops.
There were plans to open Prism Stone and Dear Crown shops in South Korea in 2013, because Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future was airing there. But those plans didn't happen.
