The Prime Minister of Armenia (Armenian: Հայաստանի Հանրապետության վարչապետ, romanized: Hayastani Hanrapetut’yan varch’apet) is the main leader of the Armenian government. This person is in charge of setting the government's main goals. They also manage what the government does and make sure all its members work together.
The Prime Minister also leads the Security Council. This council decides on the country's defense plans. This means the Prime Minister is also the top leader of Armenia's armed forces. Nikol Pashinyan is the current Prime Minister. He started his role on May 8, 2018. This happened after the previous Prime Minister, Serzh Sargsyan, stepped down.
A Look Back in Time
The First Prime Minister
The job of Prime Minister first started in 1918. This was when the First Republic of Armenia was formed. The National Council of Armenia chose the Prime Minister. This leader was responsible for issues both inside and outside the country.
Hovhannes Katchaznouni was the very first Prime Minister. His team had five members, all from the ARF party. A new Ministry of Interior was also created. Aram Manukian was its first head. This role disappeared when Armenia became part of the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Era
During the time of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, the government was set up like other Soviet areas. The main group in charge was the Council of Ministers. This council included:
- A Chairman (the top leader)
- A Vice Chairman
- A Chairman for State Planning
- Different Cabinet Ministers
- Representatives for farming and arts
Armenia Becomes Independent Again
Armenia became independent again in 1991. The job of Prime Minister was brought back. With a new constitution in 2015, the Prime Minister became the most powerful person in Armenian politics.
The President of Armenia chooses the Prime Minister. This choice must be approved by the National Assembly, which is like Armenia's parliament. The Prime Minister can be removed if the Parliament votes that they no longer trust them. In 2015, people voted to make Armenia a parliamentary republic. This means the Prime Minister and Parliament have more power.
