Prince Ferdinand Philippe of Orléans, Duke of Orléans (born September 3, 1810 – died July 13, 1842) was an important French prince. He was the oldest son of King Louis Philippe I of France.
Ferdinand Philippe was born in Sicily while his family was living away from France. From the moment he was born, he was the heir to the House of Orléans. When his father became King of the French in 1830, Ferdinand Philippe became the Prince Royal. He also received the title of Duke of Orléans, which is how he is best known. Sadly, he died in 1842, before he could become king. He also did not live to see his family lose the throne and go into exile.

Early Life and Family
Ferdinand Philippe was named after his two grandfathers. They were King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and Philippe Égalité. He was born in Palermo, a city in Sicily. At birth, he was given the title of Duke of Chartres.
His father, Louis Philippe, had modern ideas. Because of this, he was not allowed to attend the royal court at the Palace of Versailles. So, Prince Ferdinand Philippe also stayed at his father's home in Paris, called the Palais-Royal.
Becoming Heir to the Throne
In 1830, Ferdinand Philippe's father became the King of the French. This made Ferdinand Philippe the direct heir to the French throne. From then on, the person next in line to the French throne was known as the Duke of Orléans.
His father also decided that all his male descendants would be called Royal Highness. They would also use the title Prince of Orléans. So, Ferdinand Philippe became known as His Royal Highness, Prince Ferdinand Philippe of Orléans, Duke of Orléans. His own sons also received these same titles.
Marriage and Family Life
There were discussions about Ferdinand Philippe marrying his cousin, Princess Louise Marie Thérèse d'Artois. However, these plans did not happen. There were also talks about him marrying an Austrian Archduchess or a Russian Grand Duchess. But these plans also failed. People thought the new French monarchy was not strong and might not last.
Instead, he married Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. She came from a smaller royal family in Germany. They got married on May 30, 1837. This marriage made her a Royal Highness and one of the first princesses of Orléans by marriage. They had a very happy marriage and were blessed with two sons.
