Early Life and Fortune
Henri was born in Paris. When he was just 8 years old, he inherited a huge fortune. This money was worth about £200 million in today's money. At the age of seventeen, he joined the army. He started as a captain in the infantry, which are soldiers who fight on foot.
Family Life
On November 25, 1844, Henri married Princess Carolina Augusta of the Two Sicilies. They got married in Naples. Carolina Augusta was the daughter of Leopold, Prince of Salerno. Henri and Carolina had several children together. Sadly, only two of their children lived to be adults.
- Louis Philippe Marie Léopold d'Orléans, Prince of Condé (1845 – 1866). He died young and did not marry or have children.
- François Louis Philippe Marie d'Orléans, Duke of Guise (1854 – 1872). He also died young and did not marry.
His Amazing Gift
In 1884, Henri made a very generous decision. He decided to give his large estate in Chantilly to the Institute of France. This gift included the beautiful Château de Chantilly. It also included all the amazing art he had collected there. The château later became a museum for everyone to enjoy.
Because of his generosity, the French government allowed him to return to France. He had been living in exile. Henri came back to France in 1889.
