Quinn Canyon Range facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Quinn Canyon Range is a group of mountains located in the central part of Nevada, a state in the western United States. These mountains stretch across the northeastern part of Nye County and the western part of Lincoln County. While there was once a small settlement called Adaven in these mountains, it is now an abandoned ghost town.

The Quinn Canyon Range is closely connected to another mountain group called the Grant Range. They meet at a mountain pass known as Cherry Creek Summit, which is about 7,596 feet high. From this point, the Quinn Canyon Range extends for about 33 miles towards the southwest. To the west of the range lies the large Railroad Valley, and to the east is the White River Valley. To the south, you'll find Sand Spring Valley.

The highest point in the Quinn Canyon Range is an unnamed peak that reaches an elevation of 10,185 feet. This peak is located at coordinates 38°07.341′N 115°42.518′W.

Exploring the Quinn Canyon Wilderness

The Quinn Canyon Range and the nearby Grant Range are excellent examples of the unique landscape found in the Great Basin and the larger Basin and Range Province. These areas are known for their many parallel mountain ranges and valleys. In 2015, President Barack Obama helped create the Basin and Range National Monument, which is right next to these mountains.

A special part of the higher elevations in the Quinn Canyon Range is protected as the Quinn Canyon Wilderness. This wilderness area helps preserve the natural beauty and wildlife of the mountains.

Unique Plants in the Mountains

The Quinn Canyon Range is home to a very rare plant species called the sagebrush cinquefoil (Potentilla johnstonii). This plant is so rare that it has only ever been found growing in the Quinn Canyon Range. Protecting this area helps ensure that unique species like the sagebrush cinquefoil can continue to thrive.
