Racecourse Bay is a special place in South Australia, located right on the beautiful south-east coast. It looks out over the Southern Ocean, which some international maps call the Great Australian Bight. This area is about 398 kilometres (247 miles) south-east of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is also about 25 kilometres (16 miles) south of Mount Gambier, a larger town nearby.
Discovering Racecourse Bay
Racecourse Bay is a small community, or "locality," in South Australia. It's named after the lovely bay it overlooks. This area was once known as "The Racecourse." It used to be part of a bigger place called Port MacDonnell.
How Racecourse Bay Was Formed
In 1996, the land that is now Racecourse Bay was still part of Port MacDonnell. Then, in 1999, new boundaries were drawn. This created Racecourse Bay as its own separate locality. Its name, "Racecourse," has been used for a very long time in this area.
What's Racecourse Bay Like?
Racecourse Bay is located between the coastline and a road called Eight Mile Creek Road. This road connects the town of Port MacDonnell in the west to the areas of Eight Mile Creek and Wye in the east.
The land in Racecourse Bay is used for two main things. Some parts are for houses where people live. Other parts are set aside for conservation, which means protecting nature and wildlife.
How Racecourse Bay is Governed
Racecourse Bay is part of different government areas. For national elections, it is in the federal division of Barker. For state elections, it belongs to the electoral district of Mount Gambier. Locally, it is managed by the District Council of Grant.
