Wye is a small place in South Australia, a state in Australia. It's on the south-east coast, right next to the border with Victoria. Wye looks out over Discovery Bay, which is part of the Southern Ocean. Some people also call this area the Great Australian Bight.
Wye is about 399 kilometers (248 miles) south-east of Adelaide, the capital city. It's also only 22 kilometers (14 miles) south-east of Mount Gambier.
History of Wye
The name Wye first appeared around 1869. People thought it would be the name for a new town. This name came from the River Wye in England and Wales. Government surveyors planned to lay out the town in an area called the Hundred of Caroline.
A school was open in Wye from 1880 to 1882. The name Wye was also used for a private land area. Charles John Edwards bought this land in 1895. Later, in 1927, his daughter Elizabeth Hunt and David Skene divided the land further.
Official boundaries for Wye were set on October 31, 1996. The name Wye is said to come from this private land area, not the river. The area also includes a place once known as the Green Point Shack Area.
Where is Wye?
Wye is located along the coastline. It stretches from Green Point Road in the west to the state border in the east. The Glenelg River Road goes through Wye. This road connects Mount Gambier to the north with the town of Nelson in Victoria to the east.
The coastline of Wye overlooks Discovery Bay. It also includes the eastern part of a smaller bay called Brown Bay. This bay is located west of Green Point.
Land Use and Nature
Most of the land in Wye is used for farming. However, there is a strip of land along the coast set aside for conservation. This means it's protected to keep nature safe.
This protected area includes the Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park. This park is known for its beautiful underwater caves and clear water.
Government and Location
Wye is part of different government areas. It is in the federal Division of Barker. For state government, it's in the electoral district of Mount Gambier. Locally, it belongs to the District Council of Grant.
