Isma'il Ragheb Pasha (born in 1819, died in 1884) was an important politician in the Ottoman Empire and later in Egypt. He was originally from Greece and became the Prime Minister of Egypt for a short time in 1882. He also held many other high-ranking jobs in the government.

Isma'il Ragheb's Early Life

Isma'il Ragheb was born in Greece on August 18, 1819. His birthplace was either the island of Chios or Crete. When he was young, he was brought to Egypt in 1830 by Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt. Once in Egypt, he became a Muslim.

Education and First Jobs

Isma'il Ragheb was very smart. He studied at a special school called al-Maktab al-Amiri. He finished his studies and earned a degree in 1834. He could speak Greek very well.

Egypt's ruler, Muhammad Ali Pasha, noticed his talent. Isma'il Ragheb was made a First Lieutenant in the government. In 1836, he became the head of the Accounting and Revenue Agencies. This meant he was in charge of keeping track of money and taxes.

His Career in Government

Isma'il Ragheb held many important positions throughout his career. He was a very busy and influential person.

He served as a minister in several different areas:

  • Then, he became the Minister of War from 1860 to 1861. In this role, he oversaw military matters.

Achievements as Prime Minister

Even though his time as Prime Minister was brief, he made some important changes.
