Rami Shaaban (born June 30, 1975) is a Swedish former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper. His career lasted from 1994 to 2012. He is well-known for playing with clubs like Djurgårdens IF, Arsenal, Fredrikstad, and Hammarby IF. Shaaban also played for the Sweden national team from 2006 to 2008. He earned 16 caps and represented Sweden in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008.

Early Life and Background

Shaaban was born in Solna, Stockholm, Sweden. His father is from Egypt, and his mother is from Finland. This means he has both Swedish and Egyptian citizenship. He was raised as a Muslim.

Club Career Highlights

Starting His Journey

Shaaban began his senior football career at a local club called Saltsjöbadens IF. Later, he moved to Cairo, Egypt. There, he played for Zamalek and Ittihad Osman while also studying at university.

After his time in Egypt, Shaaban returned to Sweden in 1997. He joined Nacka FF, a club near his hometown. His strong performances led him to join Djurgården, a top Swedish team. He played there for two seasons. In August 2002, Shaaban got a big opportunity to move to Arsenal in England.

Time at Arsenal

Rami Shaaban joined Arsenal in August 2002. He was seen as a possible replacement for the famous goalkeeper David Seaman. When Seaman was injured, Shaaban got to play in some important matches. He played in two UEFA Champions League games. He also played in three Premier League matches. One of these was a win against their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Shaaban broke his leg during training on Christmas Eve 2002. This injury kept him out for the rest of that season. When David Seaman left Arsenal in 2003, Arsenal signed Jens Lehmann. Lehmann played every game in the 2003–04 league season. Arsenal famously went undefeated that season, earning the nickname "The Invincibles." Shaaban continued to struggle with injuries. He was loaned to West Ham United for a month in January 2004 but did not play any games for them. He returned to Arsenal and was on the bench for some games as Arsenal finished their amazing season. He left Arsenal at the end of that season.

Other Clubs and Retirement

In February 2005, Shaaban joined Brighton & Hove Albion. He made his first appearance in a 2–1 win against Sunderland. After his contract ended, he moved on. He had trials with other clubs before signing with Fredrikstad FK in Norway.

On February 12, 2008, Shaaban signed a five-year contract with the Swedish team Hammarby IF. He played for Hammarby until 2012. In 2012, he announced that he was retiring from professional football.

In 2002, after joining Arsenal, there was talk that Shaaban might be called up to the Egypt national football team. However, this did not happen. Instead, he was called up to the Sweden squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This was special because he had not yet played a full international game for Sweden.

He made his debut in a warm-up game against Finland. He played for 45 minutes and did not let any goals in. On June 10, 2006, he played in a 2006 World Cup match against Trinidad and Tobago. He started because the main goalkeeper, Andreas Isaksson, had an injury.

Shaaban also played four games in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. He kept a very important clean sheet (meaning no goals were scored against him) against the Spain national football team. He was also part of Sweden's team for the main Euro 2008 tournament.

Personal Life

Rami Shaaban grew up in Solna, Stockholm. His family includes his Finnish mother and Egyptian father. Before joining Arsenal, he also worked as a specialist in mountain explosives.

Shaaban has a son named Gabriel, who was born in 2002. Later, he started dating a makeup artist named Frida. They have a son together named Noah, born in August 2008. Shaaban moved to Hammarby partly to be closer to Gabriel. He is known for being down-to-earth. He has friends from many different backgrounds, including other footballers like Freddie Ljungberg.
