Ramon Tremosa i Balcells was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain on June 30, 1965. He is an economist and a politician. He teaches about economics at the University of Barcelona.
Ramon Tremosa has held important roles in politics. He was a Member of the European Parliament for many years. He also served as a Minister in the government of Catalonia. Currently, he is a member of the Barcelona City Council.
Early Life and School
Ramon Tremosa was born in Barcelona. His family came from Lleida, another part of Catalonia. He lived in Sant Boi de Llobregat until he was 15 years old. There, he went to a school called Don-Bosco.
Later, his family moved to the Gracia area of Barcelona. He finished his school studies at La Salle.
University Studies
In 1992, Ramon Tremosa finished his first university degree at the University of Barcelona. While studying, he also worked in tax advice starting in 1987.
He continued his studies and earned his doctorate degree in 1999. His research looked at how money policies affected factories in Catalonia. He also got a Master's degree in economics from the Pompeu Fabra University in 1999.
Political Career

Ramon Tremosa became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2009. He was an independent candidate for the Catalan party Convergència i Unió (CiU). He was re-elected in 2014.
As an MEP, he worked on the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. This committee deals with money and financial rules for Europe. He helped write reports on how Europe's financial system should be watched. He also wrote reports about the European Central Bank and fair competition.
From 2009 to 2014, he also worked on the Committee on Transport and Tourism. He discussed important projects like the Mediterranean Corridor, which is a big transport route. He also talked about rules for railways and farming policies in Europe.
In 2014, Ramon Tremosa suggested a plan with another MEP. They asked the European Commission to think about separating Google's search engine business from its other activities. This was to make sure there was fair competition online.
He also served on a special committee that looked into the Panama Papers. This committee investigated money laundering and tax avoidance.
Other Activities
- He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). This group works on global health issues.
Political Views
While in the European Parliament, Ramon Tremosa strongly supported using the Catalan language officially in European meetings. He also worked to protect the Ebro river and fought against monopolies. He believes monopolies can harm a free market.
