Rathdrum is part of the larger Coeur d'Alene area. The city got its name from a village called Rathdrum in County Wicklow, Ireland.

History of Rathdrum
In the 1800s, Rathdrum was first called Westwood. This name honored Charles Wesley Wood, who was a Pony Express rider and a rancher. He was one of the people who helped start the town.
However, in 1881, the government told the town that it needed a new name. There was already another town in the area called Westwood. A local business owner named Michael M. Cowley suggested the name "Rathdrum." This was the name of his hometown in Ireland.
Later, near the end of the 1800s, the Northern Pacific Railway built its train tracks through the area. This helped Rathdrum grow slowly. Even today, Rathdrum is on an important railway line. The Empire Builder train, run by Amtrak, travels through Rathdrum, but it doesn't stop there.
