Biography of Raul Pompeia

Raul Pompeia was born in 1863. His parents were Antônio d'Ávila Pompeia and Rosa Teixeira Pompeia.

Early Life and Education

As a young boy, Raul went to Colégio Abílio. This school was run by Abílio César Borges, who was also known as the Baron of Macaúbas. Raul was a good student there. He even helped edit the school's newspaper, O Archote.

In 1879, he moved to another school, Colégio Pedro II. While he was there, he wrote his very first book, called Uma Tragédia no Amazonas.

Moving to São Paulo

In 1881, Raul Pompeia moved to São Paulo to study law. During this time, he became very interested in important ideas like abolitionism and republicanism. Abolitionism was the movement to end slavery, and republicanism was the idea of having a republic (a country governed by elected officials) instead of an empire. He became good friends with Luís Gama, who was also an abolitionist.

Raul wrote for many newspapers in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He often used the pen name Rapp, but he had other names too, like Pompeu Stell and Lauro. He published his book Canções Sem Metro and the novel As Joias da Coroa in a newspaper called Jornal do Commercio.

In 1883, he had to move to Recife to finish his law studies. After that, he returned to Rio de Janeiro. In 1888, he wrote his most famous book, O Ateneu.

Political Involvement and Later Life

After the Lei Áurea (which means Golden Law) was passed, slavery officially ended in Brazil. Raul Pompeia then focused completely on the republican movement. When Brazil became a republic, he was given two important jobs by the president, Floriano Peixoto. He became a teacher of Mythology at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes and the director of the National Library of Brazil.

However, Raul was a strong supporter of President Peixoto. After Peixoto died, Raul gave a speech at his funeral. The new president, Prudente de Morais, felt that Raul had been disrespectful in his speech. Because of this, Raul Pompeia was fired from his job at the National Library.

Raul Pompeia passed away on December 25, 1895.
