The Raven River, sometimes called the South Raven River, is an important river in Alberta, Canada. It flows through the middle-western part of Alberta, in Clearwater County and Red Deer County. This river is a major branch of the Red Deer River, which is a much larger river system. The Raven River is known for its beautiful natural areas and the many types of fish that live in it.

The River's Journey

The North Raven River
The North Raven River is a key tributary of the Raven River.

The Raven River starts in the western foothills of Alberta. Many small streams come together to form the river there. It flows towards the east, passing close to Burnstick Lake. The river then follows Alberta Highway 54 for a while, though the highway never crosses it.

As it continues, the Raven River is joined by Beaver Creek, which includes an artificial lake called Beaver Lake. Later, Alberta Highway 22 crosses over the river. A very important moment in its journey is when it meets the North Raven River near a place called Raven. After this, the river makes a sharp turn and flows south.

Near the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, another stream called Crooked Creek joins the Raven River. Finally, the Raven River flows into the Red Deer River near Gleniffer Lake. This lake was created by the Dickson Dam.

Fish and Wildlife

The Raven River, especially its branch the North Raven River, is a very popular spot for fishing. Many different kinds of fish live here. Some of the main types you might find are Brook trout, longnose sucker, white sucker, and brown trout (which are often put into the river by people).

Because the Raven River flows into the Red Deer River, it's also home to many other fish species that live in that larger river system. These can include northern pike, yellow perch, burbot, and various types of trout like rainbow trout and bull trout. The river's healthy waters support a wide variety of aquatic life, making it an important habitat for fish and other wildlife.
