Ray Lee Tolbert was born on September 10, 1958. He is an American former professional basketball player. He was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the first round of the 1981 NBA draft. He was the 18th player picked overall.

Ray Tolbert is a 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) power forward. He played college basketball at Indiana University. He played in the NBA for five seasons with six different teams. These teams included the Nets, Seattle SuperSonics, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Atlanta Hawks.

Early Life and College Career

High School Basketball Star

Ray Tolbert went to Madison Heights High School in Anderson, Indiana. He was a very talented player in high school. In 1977, he was named to the first-ever McDonald's All-American team. This team played in the 1977 Capital Classic game.

Winning a College Championship

Tolbert played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers. In his final year, 1981, he helped lead his team to a huge victory. The team, with starters like Tolbert, Landon Turner, Isiah Thomas, Randy Wittman, and Ted Kitchel, won the NCAA championship. This was the fourth NCAA title for Indiana University and the second for their famous coach, Bob Knight.

Playing in the NBA

After college, Ray Tolbert was drafted into the NBA. He played in 261 games during his NBA career. He scored a total of 928 points. He played for several teams, moving around quite a bit during his time in the league.
