Ray Lee Tolbert is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was born on September 10, 1958. Ray was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the first round of the 1981 NBA draft. He was the 18th player picked overall.

Ray Tolbert is a tall player, standing 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall. He played as a power forward. During his career, he played for many different teams.

Ray Tolbert's Early Life and College Success

Ray Tolbert grew up in Anderson, Indiana. He went to Madison Heights High School there. He was a very talented high school player.

Becoming a McDonald's All-American

In 1977, Ray was chosen for the first-ever McDonald's All-American team. This is a special honor for the best high school basketball players in the country. These players got to play in the 1977 Capital Classic game.

Winning a National Championship at Indiana

After high school, Ray went to Indiana University. He played for the Indiana Hoosiers college team. In 1981, during his final year of college, Ray was a key player. He and his teammates, including Isiah Thomas, Landon Turner, Randy Wittman, and Ted Kitchel, led Indiana to a huge victory. They won the NCAA championship that year. This was the fourth national title for Indiana and the second for their famous coach, Bob Knight.

Ray Tolbert's Professional Basketball Career

After college, Ray Tolbert began his professional career. He played in the NBA for five seasons. He played for six different NBA teams.

Ray played for the New Jersey Nets, Seattle SuperSonics, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Atlanta Hawks. In his NBA career, he played in 261 games. He scored a total of 928 points.

Besides the NBA, Ray Tolbert also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). This was another professional basketball league. He played for several CBA teams, including the Tampa Bay Thrillers, Bay State Bombardiers, La Crosse Catbirds, Pensacola Tornados, and Fort Wayne Fury. In 1986, he was recognized for his strong defense. He was selected for the CBA All-Defensive Second Team.

He coached the Anderson Champions in the ABA. Today, Ray lives in Fishers, Indiana. He works as a Varsity Assistant coach at Fishers High School.
