History of Readyville
Before European settlers arrived, the land around Readyville was home to indigenous peoples. The Yuchi and Cherokee Nations lived here. The Yuchi left the area in the 1700s. The Cherokee people had to leave their homes in the late 1830s. This difficult journey is known as the Trail of Tears.
Founding the Community
The community we know today was started by Colonel Charles Ready. He was an early settler who came to the area in 1802. The town was named after him. In 1811, Colonel Ready opened the first post office in the community.
The next year, in 1812, he built the Readyville Mill. This mill was on the east fork of Stones River. It was an important place for the community. During the American Civil War, the mill was destroyed by a fire. It was rebuilt in the 1870s. The Readyville Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. After being fixed up in 2006, one of its buildings was a restaurant for many years.
Important Homes and Landmarks
Colonel Charles Ready had a son, also named Charles Ready. He was born in Readyville in 1802. This younger Charles Ready became a politician. He was elected to the Tennessee government in 1835. Later, he was elected to the United States government in 1853.
Their old home, the Charles Ready House, is in Cannon County. It is right on the border with Rutherford County. This house was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is now privately owned.
Readyville is also home to the Uncle Dave Macon House. This house is in Rutherford County. It was bought by Grand Ole Opry music star Uncle Dave Macon in 1900. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This house is also privately owned today.
A famous landmark in Readyville is Pilot Knob. This hill rises about 600 feet (183 meters) from its base. It is mentioned in Uncle Dave Macon's song "The Fox Chase." You can see Pilot Knob from the Uncle Dave Macon House. Pilot Knob is private property, so people are not allowed to go onto it.
Changes Over Time
In the past, during the 1900s, there were two separate schools in Readyville. These schools are no longer standing. Around 1992, a new road called John Bragg Highway was finished. This road connects Murfreesboro and Woodbury directly. It meant that much less traffic went through the center of Readyville.
Readyville has experienced tornadoes. The first confirmed tornado hit on April 10, 2009. It was a weaker tornado, called an EF0. It caused only minor damage.
On April 1, 2023, a very strong tornado hit Readyville. It was an EF2 tornado with winds of about 130 miles per hour (209 km/h). Much of the downtown area was badly damaged or destroyed. This included the Readyville Mill, the Charles Ready House, the post office, and many homes. Two people were hurt. The day after the tornado, many volunteers came to help with recovery efforts.
