History of Rebévelier
Rebévelier was first mentioned in old documents in the year 1181. Back then, it was called Robervilier.
A noble family named Rebévelier lived here in the 1200s and 1300s. For a long time, the village belonged to Bellelay Abbey. This abbey was under the rule of the Prince-Bishop of Basel. A Prince-Bishop was a powerful church leader who also governed a territory.
Before 1531, Rebévelier was part of the parish of Sapran. A parish is like a church district. But in 1531, many places changed their religion during the Protestant Reformation. Rebévelier stayed Catholic, even though nearby towns became Protestant. It then joined the parish of Undervelier.
In 1797, the French army won a big battle. Rebévelier became part of France. First, it was in a French area called Mont-Terrible. Then, in 1800, it moved to the Haut-Rhin area.
After Napoleon lost power, European leaders met at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. They decided that Rebévelier would become part of the Canton of Bern.
By the late 1800s, many French-speaking Catholic people had left Rebévelier. The village then became mostly German-speaking. Many people who moved there were Mennonite, a type of Christian group.
In the 1970s, people in this region voted to create a new canton called Canton of Jura. Rebévelier wanted to stay with the Canton of Bern. So, in 1976, its administrative district was changed. This allowed Rebévelier to remain part of Bern.
Geography of Rebévelier

Most of the forested land is thick forest. Some areas also have orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, some land is used for growing crops. Other parts are used as pastures for animals.
The town is located west of a place called the Pichoux gorge. Rebévelier includes two small villages or hamlets: Rebévelier and Les Cerniers.
A few years ago, some nearby towns thought about joining together. These were Châtelat, Monible, Sornetan, Souboz, and Rebévelier. They planned to form a new town called Petit-Val in 2015. But Rebévelier decided not to join. So, the other four towns merged without it.
Coat of Arms
The blazon (official description) of Rebévelier's coat of arms is interesting. It shows a black deer with red antlers and hooves. The deer is walking on a green hill with five small peaks. This design represents the town.
