Red Canyon is a beautiful natural area in Fremont County, Wyoming, USA. It is known for its reddish rocks and amazing views. This canyon was formed over millions of years by nature's forces. It is a special place for both wildlife and people.

How Red Canyon Was Formed

Red Canyon gets its name from the color of its rocks. These rocks contain lots of iron oxide, which is like rust. This gives the canyon its famous red color.

About 60 million years ago, the nearby Wind River Range pushed up. This movement brought old rocks closer to the surface. Streams and rivers then slowly wore these rocks away, creating the canyon.

You can see different types of rock layers here. These layers are called geologic formations. Some of them formed during the Permian Period. Others are from the Triassic Period.

Red Canyon Creek flows through the canyon. It then joins the Little Popo Agie River at the northern end. These streams provide water for plants and animals. This is very important in an area that is otherwise dry.

People of Red Canyon

People have lived in Red Canyon for over 10,000 years. The Shoshone and Washakie tribes used the canyon. It was a pathway between South Pass and the Wind River Basin.

Later, in the 1870s, new settlers arrived. They started farms on the canyon floor. These farms grew fresh fruit and grains. They supplied food to miners in nearby towns. These towns included South Pass City and Atlantic City.

Red Canyon Today

Today, much of the canyon floor is owned by the Nature Conservancy. This group works to protect important natural places. They manage the land as a working ranch. This means they use it for farming while also protecting nature.

Red Canyon is also listed as a National Natural Landmark. This means it is a nationally important natural site. It is recognized for its outstanding natural features.
