The Red Men Museum and Library is a special place in Waco, Texas, where you can learn about American history. It's also home to the official records and story of the Improved Order of Red Men. This is a patriotic group that has traditions inspired by Native Americans.

About the Museum

The Red Men Museum and Library opened its doors in 1991. It was created because of Robert E. Davis. He was a former national secretary for the Red Men group. Mr. Davis loved collecting things related to the Red Men. He also bought many other interesting items at auctions. When he passed away, he left his entire collection to the organization. This led to the museum being founded.

The museum is part of the Texas Red Men Foundation. The building also serves as the main office for the national Red Men group. Plus, it houses the Great Council of Texas office. The Red Men Museum is a part of the Texas Brazos Trail. This is a special program by the state of Texas to promote historical tourism. The museum is also a member of the Museum Association of Waco.

What You Can See: The Collection

The museum has a very interesting and varied collection of items. Most of these items are connected to American history. For example, you can see a peace blanket that belonged to the Apache leader Geronimo. There is also a bugle from the famous Gettysburg Battlefield. Another item is a writing desk once owned by Aaron Burr. You can also find moccasins from the Chiricahua leader Cochise.

The Library and Archives

The museum also has a library. This library is a place where you can study historical documents. You cannot check out books or documents from this library. However, anyone can visit and use the materials for research. The library holds many documents about the Red Men organization. It also has historical papers related to World War II. This includes reports from the Nuremberg trials, which were trials for war criminals. The complete Warren Commission report is also available here.

The Museum Building

The Red Men Museum is located close to the Waco Independent School District football stadium. It is also near a large sports complex. The building itself is made of brick. Its design reminds visitors of Monticello. Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson, a former U.S. President. The museum building also has a large hall and a kitchen. These areas can be used for different events.
