Red Mountain is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in San Bernardino County, California, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
History of Red Mountain
Red Mountain started as a busy mining town in 1919. Back then, it was known as Osdick. People came here looking for silver.
The community is about 32 miles (51 km) south-southwest of Trona. It was part of a larger area known for mining, including Randsburg, California and Johannesburg, California.
Post Office Changes
Red Mountain has its own post office. It uses the ZIP code 93558. The post office first opened in 1922 when the town was still called Osdick. In 1929, its name officially changed to Red Mountain.
Cleaning Up the Environment
In 2022, the community received a special grant. A grant is money given for a specific purpose. This grant was for $1.5 million.
The money is being used to clean up the area. Specifically, it will remove arsenic from the soil and water. Arsenic is a natural chemical element that can be harmful. It came from old gold and silver mining activities at the Kelly Mine complex. This cleanup helps make the environment safer for everyone.
