History of Red Ribbon
How Red Ribbon Started
Red Ribbon began in 1979 in the Philippines. It was started by Amalia Hizon Mercado and her husband, Renato Mercado. Their five children also helped. They opened a small cake shop in Quezon City.
At first, the family shared their cakes and pastries at gatherings. Soon, friends and relatives started asking for orders. This hobby quickly grew into a real business!
One of their daughters, Teresita Moran, created many of the special cakes. These cakes helped make Red Ribbon very popular in the Philippines.
Growing Bigger
In 1984, Red Ribbon opened its first store outside the Philippines. This store was in West Covina, California, in the United States. This was a big step for the company!
Red Ribbon started allowing other people to open their own Red Ribbon stores in 1999. This is called "franchising." This helped the company grow even faster.
Red Ribbon Today
Today, there are more than 200 Red Ribbon stores all over the Philippines. There are also many stores in the United States. You can find them in places like California, Nevada, New Jersey, New York City, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Chicago, Metropolitan Detroit, and Houston, Texas.
In 2005, a large food company called Jollibee Group bought Red Ribbon. Red Ribbon Bakeshop is now part of the Jollibee Group family of companies.
