What is the Reginald A. Daly House?
This house is a two-story building made of wood. It was built a long time ago, probably between 1880 and 1890. The house has a style called Queen Anne/Shingle. When it was made a landmark in 1976, the inside of the house had not changed much since Daly passed away.
Who was Reginald A. Daly?
Reginald Daly was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1871. He went to Victoria College, which is now part of the University of Toronto. Later, he studied at Harvard, where he earned his master's and PhD degrees in geology.
In 1908, Daly started teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Then, in 1912, he joined the faculty at Harvard. He stayed at Harvard for the rest of his life. He bought this house in 1910.
Daly's Amazing Discoveries
Reginald Daly made many important contributions to the field of geology. Geology is the study of Earth's rocks, layers, and history. He was one of the first scientists to create a clear theory about how igneous rocks form. Igneous rocks are made from cooled lava or magma. He did this by carefully studying lots of physical evidence.
Daly also helped bring physics and chemistry into the study of geology. This meant using ideas from these other sciences to understand Earth better. His work was highly respected by other scientists. He received many awards, including the first honorary degree from his old college, Victoria College. He also won the Penrose Medal, a very important award for geologists.
Why is the House Important?
The Reginald A. Daly House was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This means it's a place of great historical importance in the United States. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places that same year. In 1983, the house became part of the Old Cambridge Historic District. This district helps protect many historic buildings in the area.
