The Regni were an ancient tribe who lived in what is now southern England. They mostly lived in the area we call Sussex today. Their land also included parts of West Sussex, East Sussex, south-west Kent, eastern Surrey, and the eastern edges of Hampshire.

Their main town was called Noviomagus Reginorum, which is now the city of Chichester in West Sussex. This town was close to the River Arun, which flows into the English Channel near Littlehampton.

The Regni shared borders with other tribes. To their west were the Belgae, to the north were the Atrebates, and to the east were the Cantiaci. A large, thick forest called the Weald was to their north. Even though the forest was big, there were safe paths through it.

The Regni were very friendly with the Romans, perhaps more than other British tribes. They traded with Rome even before the Romans invaded Britain in 43 AD. The Romans even had a small trading post in their land. After the Roman invasion in 43 AD, the Romans used Chichester Harbour a lot. This suggests that the Regni's good relationship with Rome helped the Romans supply their armies in southern Britain.

King Cogidubnus and the Romans

Before the Romans took over Britain, the Regni's land was likely part of the Atrebates' territory. They might have been part of a group of tribes working together.

After the first part of the Roman conquest, the Romans allowed the Atrebates to remain a mostly independent kingdom. This kingdom acted like a "buffer zone" between the Roman-controlled areas in the east and the tribes who were not yet conquered in the west.

The ruler of this kingdom was a loyal king named Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus. A Roman writer named Tacitus said that "certain tribes were given to King Cogidubnus." This shows how much the Romans trusted him.

An old stone inscription found in Chichester tells us his Roman names. This means he was given Roman citizenship by the Roman emperors Claudius or Nero. Cogidubnus might have been related to Verica, a previous Atrebatian king. Verica's overthrow was one of the reasons the Romans invaded Britain.

After King Cogidubnus died, his kingdom became a direct part of the Roman province of Britain. It was then divided into several smaller areas, including the lands of the Atrebates, the Belgae, and the Regni.
