Rendlesham is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. It is located near the town of Woodbridge. This historic village was once a key royal center for the kings of the East Angles.
Rendlesham's closeness to the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial site suggests a link. Sutton Hoo was likely a burial place for the East Anglian royal family, known as the Wuffingas.

A Royal Past
Long ago, Rendlesham was a very important place for kings. Around the year 660, Swithhelm, the King of Essex, was baptized here. Bishop Cedd performed the baptism, and King Æthelwold of East Anglia of East Anglia was his godfather. Swithhelm died around 664, during a time of a great plague. He might have been buried at the royal palace in Rendlesham.
Archaeologists have found signs of a large settlement in Rendlesham. It covers more than 124 acres (50 hectares). This shows that many people lived and worked here a long time ago.
What Does the Name Rendlesham Mean?
The name Rendlesham comes from Old English. Around 730 AD, it was written as Rendlæsham. This name might mean "Homestead belonging to [a man named] Rendel." Another idea is that it comes from an Old English word, *rendel, which means "little shore."
Important Buildings and Places
The Church of St Gregory the Great in Rendlesham is a very old church. It is a Grade I listed building, meaning it is historically important.
Rendlesham Hall was once a large manor house in the area. However, it was taken down in 1949.
Rendlesham Forest and Its Mysteries
Rendlesham Forest is a large woodland owned by Forestry England. It covers about 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres). The forest is a great place for outdoor activities. You can go walking, cycling, or camping there. It is also part of the Sandlings Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it is a special area for nature.
Rendlesham Forest is also famous for a mysterious event. In December 1980, people reported seeing strange, pulsing lights. These lights were seen off the coast of Orford Ness. This event is known as the Rendlesham Forest incident.

In the summer of 2012, parts of the movie Fast & Furious 6 were filmed here. The filming took place on the old RAF Bentwaters airfield.

- Æthelwold of East Anglia was an Anglo-Saxon King of East Anglia. He ruled between about 654 and 664.
