The Reveille Range is a mountain range found in Nye County, Nevada, in the United States. It's known for being the site of the Reveille Range volcanic field, which means it has many rocks formed from old volcanoes.

The tallest spot in these mountains is Reveille Peak. It reaches an elevation of about 8,812 feet (2,686 meters). You can find this high point in the southern part of the range.

This mountain range is quite long, stretching about 26 miles (42 kilometers) from north to south. It is also about 8 miles (13 kilometers) wide. To the east of the Reveille Range is the Railroad Valley. To the west, you'll find the Reveille Valley.

Just to the north and northeast, you can see the Pancake Range. This area also includes the Lunar Crater volcanic field and the Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark. About seven miles west of the northern end of the Reveille Range is the community of Warm Springs. U.S. Route 6 also passes nearby.

Nevada State Route 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway, runs from Warm Springs. It goes through the area between the Reveille and Pancake Ranges. Then it turns south into Railroad Valley, passing the eastern side of the Reveille Range. West of Reveille Valley lies the Kawich Range. Across Railroad Valley to the east is the Quinn Canyon Range. To the south, you'll find the restricted Nellis Air Force Range.

Why the Reveille Range Has Its Name

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? The Reveille Range has some interesting stories behind its unique names.

Goblin Knobs: Weird Rock Shapes

  • About five miles north of Reveille, you'll find an area called Goblin Knobs.
  • These knobs were named because of how the local rock, called tuff, looks.
  • Tuff is a type of rock made from volcanic ash.
  • Over time, the wind and rain wear away the tuff, creating strange shapes.
  • These shapes look like "hoodoos" or "weird knobs," which reminded people of goblins!

Reveille: A Newspaper's Legacy

  • The name "Reveille" itself comes from a newspaper!
  • In 1866, a group of people were exploring the area, looking for valuable minerals.
  • One person in the group was Mr. Fairchild.
  • He was an editor for a newspaper called the Reese River Reveille.
  • To honor his newspaper, Mr. Fairchild decided to name the mining district in this area "Reveille."
