Richard Oglesby Marsh (1883-1953) was an American engineer, explorer, and ethnologist. An ethnologist is a scientist who studies different cultures and peoples. Marsh went on trips to Panama for engineering and to learn about cultures. He is well-known for helping the Kuna Indians during the Guna Revolution in 1925.

Richard Marsh's Life and Adventures

Searching for Rubber Lands

In the early 1920s, Richard Marsh worked for famous businessmen like Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. They sent him to find good places to grow rubber trees. Rubber was very important for making car tires and other products.

Marsh first explored the area near the Panama Canal and Costa Rica. But the land there was too bumpy and uneven for big rubber farms. So, he moved on to explore the Darien region of Panama. This area was mostly unexplored back then. While in Darien, Marsh heard about and looked for a group of people sometimes called "white-Indians." This made him want to organize a scientific trip to learn more.

The Marsh Darien Expedition

Richard Marsh wanted to explore Darien for more than just rubber. He tried to get Ford and Firestone to pay for a big scientific trip, but they were only interested in rubber. Marsh then lost interest in rubber himself and decided not to go to other places like the Philippines or Liberia to find it.

Instead, a rich friend helped Marsh get money for a new adventure in Darien. Important groups like the University of Rochester, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Institution joined the expedition. The President of Panama, Belisario Porras, also supported Marsh. This trip happened between 1924 and 1925 and was called the Marsh Darien Expedition.

Helping the Guna People

During his trip, Richard Marsh met the Kuna people. He quickly found them to be friendly and interesting. He also learned that the Panamanian government was trying to change the Kuna's culture and way of life. Marsh wanted to help the Kuna. He brought some Kuna people to North America to show their culture and raise awareness. This got attention in both Canada and the United States.

Marsh soon went back to Panama. He became a spokesperson for the Kuna people, even though his first goal was to find wealth. In 1925, Marsh helped the Kuna leaders plan their rebellion against the Panamanian government. He also helped them write their declaration of independence, which announced a new Kuna Republic.
