Richmond is a city in Michigan, a state in the United States. It is part of the larger Metro Detroit area. In 2020, about 5,878 people lived there. Most of Richmond is in Macomb County, but a small part is in nearby St. Clair County.

History of Richmond
In 1835, a person named Erastus Beebe and his brothers started a new settlement in Michigan. They called it Beebe's Corners. Later, in 1878, Beebe's Corners joined with two nearby communities, Ridgeway and Cooper Town. Together, they formed the village of Richmond.
The Michigan Legislature officially made Richmond a village in 1879. Over the years, the city grew. In 1989, Richmond added more land from nearby areas like Muttonville and parts of Richmond, Lenox, Casco, and Columbus Townships.
Geography of Richmond
Richmond is located about 38 miles (61 km) northeast of downtown Detroit. It is also 16 miles (26 km) northeast of Mount Clemens, which is the main city of Macomb County. Port Huron, the main city of St. Clair County, is about 26 miles (42 km) southwest of Richmond.
Highway M-19 goes through Richmond and is known as its Main Street. This highway goes north to Memphis and south to New Haven.
Richmond is next to Richmond Township and Lenox Township in Macomb County. It is also near Columbus Township and Casco Township in St. Clair County.
The city covers a total area of about 2.92 square miles (7.57 km²). Most of this area, about 2.89 square miles (7.49 km²), is land. A small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.09 km²), is water.
Neighborhoods in Richmond
- Muttonville is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of Richmond. It is located near the border with Casco Township in St. Clair County. Muttonville got its name because it was a main place for processing sheep in an area where many sheep were raised.

According to the census from 2010, Richmond had 5,735 people living in the city. The city had about 2,479 homes.
Most of the people in Richmond were White (94.2%). Other groups included African American (1.0%), Native American (0.3%), and Asian (0.2%). About 4.6% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Fun Things to Do in Richmond
Richmond has a library where you can find books and resources. There is also a local community theater called the Richmond Community Theatre.
The city has three main parks: Beebe Street Memorial Park, Bailey Park, and Gierk Park. Beebe Street Memorial Park is quite large, with five baseball fields and an outdoor swimming pool. Bailey Park has a baseball field, a soccer field, and four tennis courts. Gierk Park is smaller and has a playground. You can also find other sports facilities near the public schools and private schools like St. Augustine Catholic Elementary School and St. Peter Lutheran School.
Richmond is a starting point for the Macomb Orchard Trail. This trail is 23.5 miles (37.8 km) long and is great for walking, biking, and other non-motorized activities. It was built on an old railroad path. The trail also connects to other parks like Stony Creek Metropark and Bloomer Park.
Every year, Richmond hosts the Richmond Good Old Days Festival. This festival has many fun activities, mostly at Beebe Street Memorial Park. Past festivals have included pageants, sports games, musical shows, craft fairs, and fireworks. There are also parades for children and a grand parade.
The local newspaper for Richmond used to be the Richmond Review, but it was later bought by The Voice.
Education in Richmond
The Richmond Community School District serves all of Richmond and parts of nearby townships. This district includes an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. In 2002, about 2,000 students attended these schools.
Besides the public schools, there are also private schools in Richmond. St. Augustine is a Catholic elementary school, and St. Peter's is a Lutheran elementary school.
Historic Buildings in Richmond
Several buildings in Richmond have historical importance. The First Congregational Church, which is now home to the Richmond Community Theatre, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The State of Michigan has also placed a historical marker in front of the Harold and Mabelle Weller House. St. Augustine Church is also known for its unique design, with twin steeples and Italian gothic style.
The Richmond Area Historical and Genealogical Society takes care of several historic buildings in Bailey Historic Park. These include:
- A one-room schoolhouse built in 1885.
- A Grand Trunk Railroad Depot from the early 1900s.
- The Donley Family Log Cabin and Outhouse, built in 1850.
The Society also has a newer building, a replica of a Blacksmith Shop, which serves as their museum and office.
Famous People from Richmond
- Joseph Cella: He was a U.S. ambassador to several countries. He grew up in Richmond.
- Jeff Gutt: He is the lead singer for the rock band Stone Temple Pilots.
- Andrea LaFontaine: She was elected as a state representative when she was 23 years old.
- Justin Jaynes: A professional mixed martial artist who competed in the UFC.
- Steve Mazur: He is the lead guitarist for the band Our Lady Peace.
- Brandon Varney: A racing driver.
