River Loud
The River Loud flows near Longridge.

The River Loud is a small river in Lancashire, England. It's a lovely part of the English countryside.

Where Does the River Loud Start and Go?

The River Loud begins its journey on a hill called Parlick. From there, it gently winds its way through the area. Most of its path is in the parish of Chipping.

The river flows in different directions as it travels. First, it goes south-west, then south-east. Near a place called Gill Bridge, it turns east. After that, it heads north-east, following a path similar to Longridge Road.

Joining Other Waters

As the River Loud continues, it passes Hesketh Lane. It also collects water from a smaller stream called Chipping Brook. This brook comes from the village of Chipping to the north. Finally, the River Loud joins the River Hodder. The River Hodder flows towards the east, and they meet near Doeford Bridge.

The River's Ancient Past

Rivers can change their paths over thousands of years! Long, long ago, the lower parts of the River Loud were very different. In the past, the River Hodder actually flowed into the Loud. It went west from Doeford Bridge. This is the opposite of how it flows today!

Old River Paths

This ancient river then continued south-west. It flowed through Halfpenny Lane, west of Longridge. From there, it might have joined other streams. It could have met Blundell Brook, passing Broughton and Woodplumpton. This would have led it to the River Wyre. Or, it might have joined Savick Brook through Fulwood. This path would have taken it to the River Ribble. It's amazing how much the land and rivers can change over time!
