Riverton is a small city located in Fremont County, Iowa, in the United States. It sits right next to the East Nishnabotna River. In 2020, about 245 people lived there.

History of Riverton

Riverton was officially started in 1870. The land where the city was built belonged to Coleman and Grazilla Smith. The Smith family later opened the very first bank in Riverton.

In 1881, the Sexton Bank in Riverton was robbed. At first, people thought the famous outlaw Jesse James might have done it. However, it was soon discovered that another outlaw named Poke Wells was actually responsible for the robbery.

Geography and Location

Riverton is located along the East Nishnabotna River. This river is an important natural feature of the area.

The city covers a total area of about 0.60 square miles (1.56 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or significant bodies of water within the city limits.
