Robert Frederick Smith, born on December 1, 1962, is an American businessman. He is also known for his generous giving to many causes. He started a company called Vista Equity Partners, where he is the founder, chairman, and CEO. This company helps other businesses grow, especially those that create computer software.

Early Life and Family
Robert F. Smith was born in Denver, Colorado. His family had lived in Colorado for many generations. His parents were both principals at schools and had advanced degrees in education. His mother, Dr. Sylvia Myrna Smith, was the principal of George Washington High School. His father, Dr. William Robert Smith, was an elementary school principal.
Robert grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in East Denver. When he was a baby, his mother took him to the historic March on Washington. This was where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Education and First Jobs
Smith went to East High School in Denver. While he was still in high school, he wanted to intern at Bell Labs. They usually only took college students. But Robert kept calling them every Monday for five months. Finally, a college student didn't show up, and Robert got the internship. That summer, he helped develop a test for computer chips.
He later studied chemical engineering at Cornell University, graduating in 1985. While there, he won an award for his work in chemical engineering. He also joined the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
After college, Smith worked for companies like Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Kraft General Foods. As a chemical engineer, he even invented things that received patents in the United States and Europe.
In 1994, he earned a master's degree in business from Columbia University. He focused on finance and marketing during his studies.
