Robert Ludwell Yates Peyton (born February 8, 1822 – died September 3, 1863) was an important figure from Missouri. He worked as a lawyer and politician. He also served as an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Peyton was a Confederate States Senator. He held this role from February 18, 1862, until he passed away in 1863. He died in Alabama from malaria, a sickness he caught while helping defend Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Early Life and Education
Robert Ludwell Yates Peyton was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1822. His family had a long history in Virginia. His grandfather, Francis Peyton, was a well-known politician in the area.
Robert went to college at Miami College in Ohio. He also studied at the University of Virginia. He never got married.
His Career in Law and Politics
By 1850, Robert Peyton was working as a lawyer. He lived in Cass County, Missouri, which is near modern-day Kansas City.
In 1858, the people of Missouri elected Peyton to the Missouri State Senate. This was a big step in his political career.
Later, he became one of Missouri's representatives to the Provisional Confederate Congress. After that, he was elected to serve as a Confederate States Senator.
Military Service and Passing
The American Civil War began in 1861. On July 16, 1861, Robert Peyton formed a group of cavalry soldiers. This group became known as the 3rd Missouri Cavalry.
Peyton became a colonel in charge of this unit. However, he resigned from his military role on December 13, 1861.
He later joined the Confederate States Army. Robert Ludwell Yates Peyton died on September 3, 1863. He passed away in Bladon Springs, Alabama, after getting malaria. He had caught the illness while defending Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the war.
