Rocky Dawuni's Music Journey
Rocky Dawuni first heard Reggae music in Ghana when he was young. A military band played a song by Bob Marley at a military camp near Accra, Ghana's capital city. This moment inspired him greatly.
Rocky started an exciting yearly music event called "Independence Splash" in Ghana. This festival happens every year on Ghanaian Independence Day, which is March 6.
Rocky Dawuni has released eight full music albums. His sixth album, called Branches of The Same Tree, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in December 2015. This was for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, and the album came out on March 31, 2015. This made him the first person from Ghana to be nominated for a Grammy! A magazine called Songlines even said this album was one of the top 10 most important reggae albums ever.
The album was inspired by the soulful music of Fela Kuti and Bob Marley. It showed how Rocky Dawuni could share uplifting messages with many people through his songs.
In 2019, Rocky released the album Beats of Zion. It came out on January 25 and featured the Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy. The music video for "Champion Arise" from this album was named "Top Tune of the Day" by a popular radio station, KCRW.
In June 2019, Rocky also released a new song called "Modern Man." It was remixed by Gaudi. His eighth album, Voice of Bunbon, Vol. 1, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2022. This was for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, making Rocky a multi-Grammy nominee. Three music videos were made for this album. One was "Ghost Town," filmed by photographer Casey Bridges. Another video, "Beautiful People," was filmed in Rocky's home village of Bunbon by a Ghanaian filmmaker named Slingshot.
Rocky released the music video for Woara in September 2021. Woara means "you" or "it's you" in the Twi language. This love song uses a call-and-response style to show the joy of being in love.
In 2022, Rocky Dawuni received his third Grammy nomination. This was for Best Global Music Performance for his song “Neva Bow Down,” which featured Blvk H3ro. His previous nominations were in 2015 and 2021.
In 2024, he released a new song called 'Rise'.
