Roger A. "Rocky" McIntosh Jr. (born November 15, 1982) is a former professional football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Rocky played college football for the Miami Hurricanes. He was chosen in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins.

Early Life and High School Football

Roger "Rock" McIntosh grew up in a military family. He moved to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, when he was in 8th grade. He was very athletic and good at many sports.

McIntosh later attended Gaffney High School in Gaffney, South Carolina. In his final year, he was ranked as one of the best linebackers in the country. He also earned All-American honors. Rocky was known for being a good student, keeping a 3.0 grade-point average in high school.

Education and Learning

Rocky McIntosh continued his education even while playing professional football. Here are some of the places he studied:

  • The George Washington University – He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2013.
  • The Wharton School – He attended the NFL Entrepreneurship Program in 2009.
  • Harvard Business School – He also attended the NFL Entrepreneurship Program in 2007.
  • University of Miami – He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology in 2006.

College Football Career

McIntosh first planned to go to Clemson University. However, he later decided to attend the University of Miami. He also had offers from other big schools like the University of Tennessee and Florida State University.

During his time with the Hurricanes, he played in 46 games. He started 26 of those games. He finished his college career with 266 tackles and nine sacks.

Freshman Season (2002)

After taking a "redshirt" year in 2001 (meaning he practiced but didn't play in games), McIntosh started six games as a freshman. He played his first college game in August 2002. In January 2003, he played in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, which was the college national championship game. The Hurricanes lost that game in double overtime. In his first season, he had 43 tackles and eight tackles for a loss.

Sophomore Season (2003)

In his second year, McIntosh had a knee injury that slowed him down. He missed the first game of the season. He played in 12 games and made 23 tackles. He also played in the 2004 Orange Bowl, where the Hurricanes won.

Junior Season (2004)

As a junior, McIntosh played in ten games and started nine. He had a career-high 17 tackles in a game against the University of Houston. He ranked second on his team with 111 tackles. He also had 13 tackles for a loss and four sacks. Because of his great play, he was named the Hurricanes Linebacker of the Year.

Senior Season (2005)

In his final college season, McIntosh started 11 games. He led the Hurricanes in tackles with 89. He also had 5.5 sacks and ten tackles for a loss.

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins chose Rocky McIntosh in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He was the 35th player picked overall.

2006 Season

In his first NFL season, McIntosh played in all 16 regular-season games. He started two of them. He made 23 tackles and was also very good on special teams, making 25 tackles there. In his two starts, he had more than ten tackles in each game.

2007 Season

In 2007, McIntosh had a great year. He played in 14 games and started 13. He set new personal bests with 105 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. He got his first career sack in a game against the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, in December 2007, he suffered a serious knee injury. He was recognized as the Redskins’ nominee for the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. This award honors players for their community service and excellent play.

2008 Season

After his injury, McIntosh came back strong in 2008. He played in all 16 games and started 15. He recorded 87 tackles, two sacks, and his first career interception. He also forced two fumbles.

2009 Season

In 2009, McIntosh played in all 16 regular season games again, starting 15. He finished the season with 94 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

2010 Season

The Redskins changed their defensive strategy in 2010. McIntosh moved from an outside linebacker to an inside linebacker. He started 15 games and set a new career high with 110 tackles. He also had two sacks.

2011 Season

McIntosh re-signed with the Redskins for one more year in 2011. He started eight games and made 65 tackles, one sack, and one pass breakup.

St. Louis Rams

McIntosh signed with the St. Louis Rams in June 2012. He returned to playing as an outside linebacker. He earned a starting spot and finished the season with 44 tackles, one sack, and one interception.

Detroit Lions

In August 2013, McIntosh signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions. He made the team's final roster but was later waived. He then re-signed with the team a few days later.

Rocky McIntosh is the son of Roger McIntosh Sr. and Darcia McIntosh. He has two younger brothers, John and Arthur. Rocky is married to Alessia. They have two sons, Gavin and Landon, and two daughters, Natalie and Camelia. Natalie is very good at tennis. Rocky and Alessia got married on a beach just three days before the 2006 NFL draft. They met on his first day of college at the University of Miami.
