Roger A. "Rocky" McIntosh Jr. (born November 15, 1982) is a former American football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Rocky played college football for the Miami Hurricanes. He was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School Football

Roger "Rock" McIntosh grew up in a military family. He was always very athletic and was good at any sport he tried. When he was in 8th grade, he moved to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. There, he and another student were the only 8th graders to play basketball for the high school freshman team.

McIntosh later moved to Gaffney, South Carolina, in 10th grade. He played high school football at Gaffney High School. In his senior year, he was ranked among the top linebackers in the country. He also earned All-American honors, which means he was one of the best players in the nation. McIntosh was also named to the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team. While in high school, he maintained a 3.0 grade-point average.

Education and Learning

Rocky McIntosh focused on his education while playing football. Here are some of the places he studied:

  • The George Washington University – He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2013. He did this while still playing in the NFL!
  • The Wharton School – He attended the NFL Entrepreneurship Program in 2009.
  • Harvard Business School – He also attended the NFL Entrepreneurship Program in 2007.
  • University of Miami – He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology in 2006.

College Football Career at Miami

McIntosh decided to play college football for the University of Miami. He had also received offers from other big schools like the University of Tennessee and Florida State University. During his time with the Hurricanes, he played in 46 games and started 26 of them. He finished his college career with 266 tackles and nine sacks.

Freshman Season (2002)

After taking a "redshirt" year in 2001 (meaning he practiced but didn't play in games), McIntosh started six games as a freshman. He played his first college game on August 31, 2002. He had a season-high ten tackles in a win against West Virginia University. He also played in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, which was the 2002 BCS National Championship Game. In that game, he made eight tackles, but the Hurricanes lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes. In his first season, McIntosh had 43 tackles and forced one fumble.

Sophomore Season (2003)

In his second year, McIntosh faced a challenge with a knee injury. He had surgery and missed the first game of the season. Despite the injury, he played in 12 games. He made a season-high eight tackles in a game against Syracuse University. He also played in the 2004 Orange Bowl, where the Hurricanes won against the Florida State Seminoles.

Junior Season (2004)

As a junior, McIntosh played in ten games and started nine. He played both strongside and middle linebacker positions. In the first game of the season against Florida State University, he recorded 11 tackles. He had a career-high 17 tackles in a win over the University of Houston. He missed some games due to a shoulder injury. Even with injuries, he was second on the team with 111 tackles. He was also named the Hurricanes Linebacker of the Year.

Senior Season (2005)

In his final college season, McIntosh started 11 games. He led the Hurricanes in tackles with 89. He also had 5.5 sacks. After the season, he received All-ACC honorable mention honors.

Washington Redskins (2006–2011)

The Washington Redskins drafted McIntosh in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He was the 35th player chosen overall.

2006 Season

In his first NFL season, McIntosh played in all 16 regular-season games. He started two games and made 23 tackles. He also had 25 special teams tackles. In his two starts, he recorded double-digit tackles.

2007 Season

In 2007, McIntosh had a great year, setting new personal bests. He played in 14 games and started 13. He made 105 tackles, 3 sacks, and forced 3 fumbles. He recorded his first NFL sack against the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury in December and was placed on injured reserve. McIntosh was also recognized for his community service, being nominated for the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

2008 Season

After his injury, McIntosh came back strong in 2008. He played in all 16 games and started 15. He recorded 87 tackles, 2 sacks, and his first career interception. He also forced two fumbles. He made a season-high 12 tackles in a win against the Arizona Cardinals.

2009 Season

In 2009, McIntosh continued to be a key player for the Redskins. He played in all 16 games and started 15. He finished the season with 94 tackles and two interceptions. He recorded his second career interception in a game against the Atlanta Falcons.

2010 Season

The Redskins changed their defensive strategy in 2010. McIntosh moved from an outside linebacker to an inside linebacker. He started 15 games and set a new career high with 110 tackles. He also had two sacks.

2011 Season

McIntosh re-signed with the Redskins for one more year in 2011. He started eight games and recorded 65 tackles and one sack.

St. Louis Rams (2012)

McIntosh signed with the St. Louis Rams in 2012. He returned to playing as an outside linebacker. He earned a starting spot and finished the season with 44 tackles, one sack, and one interception.

Detroit Lions (2013)

McIntosh signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions in 2013. He made the team's final roster but was later waived. He re-signed with the team a few days later.

Rocky McIntosh is the son of Roger McIntosh Sr. and Darcia McIntosh. He has two younger brothers, John and Arthur. Rocky is married to Alessia, and they have two sons, Gavin and Landon, and two daughters, Natalie and Camelia. Natalie is very good at tennis. Rocky and Alessia got married on a beach just three days before the 2006 NFL Draft. They met on his first day of college at the University of Miami.
