Rocky Peak Ridge is a cool mountain located in the Adirondack Park in New York. It's the twentieth highest peak in the special group called the Adirondack High Peaks. This mountain gets its name because it has a long, rocky ridge on its eastern side. This ridge is quite unusual for the Adirondacks!
Exploring Rocky Peak Ridge
Rocky Peak Ridge is known for its unique look. It has a long, bare, rocky ridge that stands out. This happened because of a big forest fire in 1913. The fire cleared away the trees, leaving the rocky ground exposed.
How to Hike to the Top
There are two main trails you can take to reach the top of Rocky Peak Ridge. Both offer a great adventure!
- One trail starts from the town of New Russia. This path is about ten miles long, round trip. Along the way, you'll find a few steep sections where you might need to scramble over rocks.
- The more popular trail connects from the Giant Mountain trail. This path splits off just a little bit below Giant Mountain's summit. From there, it goes steeply downhill for about 0.4 miles. After that, it becomes a gentle uphill walk for another 0.8 miles to Rocky Peak Ridge.
Amazing Views from the Summit
When you reach the top of Rocky Peak Ridge, you'll be rewarded with incredible views! You can see all around, a full 360 degrees. There are also many great spots along the ridge to stop and enjoy the scenery.
You'll get spectacular views of nearby Giant Mountain. You can also see the beautiful Great Range and the Dix Mountain Wilderness. On a clear day, you might even spot Lake Champlain and the state of Vermont in the distance. The hike is definitely worth it for these amazing sights!
