Rodolph Crandall (born February 19, 1832 – died October 23, 1922) was an American politician and soldier. He was born in New York. Rodolph Crandall fought in the American Civil War. After the war, he moved to Oregon. In Oregon, he held many important jobs in Washington County. He also served as the mayor of Hillsboro two times.
Early Life and Military Service
Rodolph Crandall was born on February 19, 1832. His birthplace was Watson, a town in Lewis County, New York. His family later moved to Ohio. Crandall then moved to Minnesota.
In December 1862, he married Elizabeth Shannon in South Bend, Minnesota. She was born in 1847. When the American Civil War began, Rodolph Crandall joined the United States Army. He was part of the 5th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He became a captain of L company. He left the army in January 1865.
Life in Oregon
In 1876, Rodolph Crandall moved his family to Oregon. He had four children: Max, Robert, Jesse, and Avery. They settled in Hillsboro, which is the main town of Washington County.
Crandall held several important jobs in Washington County. He was the county's treasurer for four years. He also worked as the county assessor for four years. An assessor helps decide the value of property for taxes. He then served as a county judge for eight years.
Rodolph Crandall helped start the Hillsboro Fire Department. This happened in 1881. In 1891, a special time capsule was placed in the Washington County Courthouse. It included a picture of Judge Crandall.
Serving as Mayor
On January 2, 1882, Rodolph Crandall was chosen for the Hillsboro Board of Trustees. This board is like today's City Council. He was then elected as the president of the board. This made him the mayor of Hillsboro. He was mayor until December 13, 1882. After him, Thomas H. Tongue became mayor.
Crandall served as mayor a second time. This was from 1884 to 1885. He took over from A. M. Collins, who was his wife's brother. William D. Hare became mayor after Crandall on December 14, 1885. Rodolph's son, Max, also later worked for the county. Max also served on the Hillsboro City Council.
Later Years and Legacy
Rodolph Crandall was involved in community groups. He was a member of the Free Masons. He even served as the secretary for the local Tuality Lodge in Hillsboro. He was also an active leader in the Washington County Veteran Association. This group helped people who had served in the military.
Rodolph Crandall passed away on October 23, 1922. He was 90 years old. He died in Hillsboro and was buried at the Hillsboro Pioneer Cemetery.
