About Rosemary Rogers
Her Early Life
Rosemary Jansz was born on December 7, 1932. This was in Panadura, which was then called British Ceylon. Today, it is known as Sri Lanka. Her parents, Barbara and Cyril Jansz, owned several private schools.
Rosemary grew up with many servants. She was quite protected from the outside world. She started writing stories when she was only eight years old. As a teenager, she wrote many romantic adventures. She loved the style of famous writers like Sir Walter Scott and Alexandre Dumas.
She was the first woman in her family to work outside the home. She became a feature writer for a newspaper in Ceylon.
Family and Moving to America
Rosemary studied at the University of Ceylon for three years. After that, she became a reporter. She married Summa Navaratnam, a famous rugby player from Ceylon. He was known as "the fastest man in Asia."
After some time, Rosemary and Summa separated. In 1960, she moved to London with their two daughters, Rosanne and Sharon. In Europe, she met Leroy Rogers from the United States. They got married in St. Louis, Missouri. Rosemary then moved her family to California. There, they had two sons, Michael and Adam.
Her second marriage ended after eight years. Rosemary then had to support her four children by herself. She worked as a typist for the Solano County Parks Department. In 1969, her parents also came to live with her. She later married Christopher Kadison in 1984, but this marriage was short.
Rosemary Rogers continued to live and write in California. She passed away on November 12, 2019, at her home in Monterey, California. She was 86 years old.
Her Writing Success
Rosemary worked very hard on a story she had started as a child. She rewrote it 24 times over a year. Her teenage daughter found the story and told her to send it to a publisher.
Avon Books quickly bought the novel. That book, Sweet Savage Love, became a huge hit. It was one of the most popular historical romances ever. Her second novel, Dark Fires, sold two million copies in just three months.
Her first three novels together sold 10 million copies. Her fourth book, Wicked Loving Lies, sold 3 million copies in its first month. Rosemary Rogers' books often featured characters who traveled to exciting places. They met important people and had many adventures.
One of her novels, Love Play (1981), was even featured in the Hindi film Khiladi (1992).
