History of Rowlett
Rowlett gets its name from Rowlett Creek. This creek flows into Lake Ray Hubbard. It is a big branch of the east fork of the Trinity River.
The creek was named after Daniel Rowlett. He moved to Bonham, Texas, in 1835. Daniel Rowlett did not have any direct connection with the town itself.
Early Beginnings and Growth
The first post office in the area opened on April 5, 1880. It was first called "Morris." This name came from the Postmaster, Austin Morris.
Later, the town was renamed "Rowlett." In 1886, the Dallas and Greenville Railway built tracks through the town. This connected Dallas with Greenville, Texas.
In 1921, Rowlett was a stop on the Bankhead Highway. This was an important road for travel.
Becoming a City
Rowlett officially became a city in 1952. At that time, only 250 people lived there. In the 1960s, the town did not grow much. This was because Interstate 30 was built and bypassed Rowlett.
After Lake Ray Hubbard was finished in 1971, Rowlett started to grow very fast.
- By 1973, the population was 1,600.
- By 1989, it grew to 10,573.
- By 1990, it reached 23,260.
- By 2000, the population was 44,503.
