Roy became an official city on January 16, 1908. It is a rural area located outside of Tacoma. Most homes in Roy are ranch-style, and there are many farms.
Roy was once a busy and important town. It was a major stop on the railroad line. However, three big events caused the town to shrink.
- In 1929, a large fire destroyed many businesses downtown. This happened just before the Great Depression, which made things even harder.
- Over time, the railroad stopped using Roy as a main stop. This meant fewer people and goods came through the town.
- The Army took over much of the land around Roy. This limited how much the city could grow. It also removed the nearby community of Loveland.
Today, a popular event in Roy is the Roy Pioneer Rodeo. People and spectators from different states and even Canada come to enjoy it.
