Ruby Lin Xin-ru (Chinese: 林心如; pinyin: Lín Xīnrú; born January 27, 1976) is a famous Taiwanese actress, TV and film producer, and singer. She is known for her many roles in popular TV shows and movies. Ruby Lin started her career as a model in 1993. She became very famous across Asia for playing Xia Ziwei in the hit TV series My Fair Princess (1998-1999).

After this success, she starred in other popular TV series. These included The Duke of Mount Deer (2000) and Romance in the Rain (2001). She also appeared in films like The House That Never Dies (2014). As a singer, she released six albums, starting with Heartbeat in 1999.

In 2009, Ruby Lin started her own company. This allowed her to produce TV shows and movies. She often starred in these productions herself. Her first show as a producer, The Glamorous Imperial Concubine (2011), won her an award for Best Producer. Her first Taiwanese drama, The Way We Were (2014), won Best Television Series at the 50th Golden Bell Awards.

Ruby Lin has been one of Taiwan's highest-earning actresses. She was ranked among the top celebrities in China by Forbes several times.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting

Ruby Lin was born and grew up in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Her English name, Ruby, came from her mother's love for the jewel. She is the oldest of four children. Her parents divorced when she was seven years old. Ruby lived with her mother after the divorce.

When she was seventeen, a talent agent discovered her. She was still in high school at the time. Ruby started working as a part-time commercial model. Her first TV commercial was for a tea brand in 1994.

At first, her parents did not want her to work in entertainment. But after she appeared in several commercials, they agreed. She officially joined an entertainment company on her 20th birthday.

Starting Her Acting Journey: 1995–1996

Ruby Lin had her first acting experience in 1995. It was a small role, but it made her love acting. Directors noticed her after her first TV commercial. She got her first film role in School Days.

From 1995 to 1997, Ruby acted in several Taiwanese TV series. People started to notice her work. In 1996, she went to China for the first time to film. She saw this as a valuable learning experience.

"I was in my second year of high school when I first got involved in film & TV industry. I thought there would be other opportunities for me to study abroad, but one does not bump into the opportunity to be in a film every day. So, I just went and had a try. I told myself that if my filming career didn't work out, then I could still go back to school. But things are not always as they may have appeared to be."

Becoming a Star: 1997–2001

After playing smaller roles, Ruby Lin was chosen for a main role. This was in the TV drama My Fair Princess. It was a big show made by both mainland China and Taiwan. The show became incredibly popular. It was a huge hit in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. Ruby Lin became famous very quickly.

"After it was decided that I played the role of Ziwei, I got the script only three days before I had to leave for filming. And that was also the first time I was leaving my native place for such a long time for filming and I had to overcome the challenges of being in an unfamiliar environment. After My Fair Princess, Ruby starred in many successful TV series. In 2000, she played Princess Jian Ning in The Duke of Mount Deer. This role showed her acting skills, as it was different from her sweet image. The next year, she starred in Romance in the Rain. This show was also very successful. For two years, Ruby Lin was named one of the Top Ten Most Famous Asian Superstars.

Ruby also started acting in films. In 2000, she appeared in three Hong Kong films. These included the action movie China Strike Force. These films helped her enter the Hong Kong movie market.

Continued Success: 2002–2005

From 2002, Ruby Lin focused on her career in mainland China. In 2003, she starred in three series. One was Half Life Fate, based on a famous novel. This was a challenging role for her. Her performance in this series made her even more famous.

She also starred in the romantic TV series Boy & Girl. This show had the highest ratings on CCTV in 2003. Ruby was chosen as one of the Top 10 actresses of the year. She was the only Taiwanese actress on that list. She also appeared in her first martial arts series, Flying Daggers. In this show, she played a cold assassin, which was a new type of role for her.

Even though she focused on TV, Ruby continued to act in films. These included Life Express and Love Trilogy. In 2004, she starred in Amor de Tarapaca, a show made with a Korean actor. She also appeared in Magic Touch of Fate, which was a very expensive TV series for its time.

After almost ten years of non-stop filming, Ruby wanted to go back to school. In late 2004, she studied language and acting in New York City for three months. She returned to Taiwan in 2005 with a new passion for acting. She then starred in Paris Sonata and Sound of Colors. In Sound of Colors, she played a blind radio DJ. Her performance received good reviews.

In 2006, Ruby Lin starred in Ancestral Temple. This role helped her expand her acting skills even more. In June 2006, she won the Most Popular Actress in Taiwan award. She was also often listed as one of the Top 10 contemporary Chinese actors.

At the end of 2006, Ruby signed with Huayi Brothers, a large film and TV company in China. In 2007, she guest-starred in the historical drama Su DongPo. She played the first wife of the famous poet Su Dongpo.

Ruby took on more challenging roles. In late 2007, she played Daji in The Legend and the Hero 2. Daji was known for her beauty and cruelty. Ruby's performance received positive comments from the media. She often said, "comparing with other people is meaningless, I just wants a breakthrough from past looks, to surpass myself."

In 2008, Ruby returned to Taiwan for the series Love in Sun Moon Lake. She played an aboriginal woman. She was also cast as Sun Shangxiang in the new Romance of the Three Kingdoms TV show, Three Kingdoms. This series aired in May 2010 and was very popular.

In 2009, she starred in Fallen City, playing a rebellious woman during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. In July 2009, Ruby played Empress Dou in the historical drama Beauty's Rival in Palace. This series became a huge hit when it premiered in March 2010. Ruby received great reviews. Beauty's Rival in Palace was also very popular in Korea and Japan. This show was another big step in Ruby Lin's career.

New Challenges and Producing: 2010–2011

In May 2010, Ruby Lin performed in her first stage play, Sweet Sweet Love. It was based on a romantic film. The play toured several cities in China.

In June, Ruby played a psychiatrist in the film You Deserve To Be Single. She was nominated for Best Actress at the 2010 Shanghai International Film Festival. She also won the 2010 Vietnam DAN Movie Award for Favorite Taiwanese Actress. After that, she starred in the film Driverless. Critics praised her performance, saying she showed a wonderful range of emotions.

2010 was a very successful year for Ruby Lin. She won the Most Popular Actress award at the 5th Seoul International Drama Awards. She was voted best actress by online users in Asian countries. In March 2012, Ruby Lin was named Most Influential TV Actress. She also received a nomination for Best TV Actress for The Glamorous Imperial Concubine.

She then filmed The Patriot Yue Fei, a historical drama. Ruby played the wife of General Yue Fei.

On April 27, 2012, Ruby announced her third project as producer and main actress. This was the TV film Forgotten. She played a married woman whose marriage was falling apart. Critics praised Ruby's performance in Forgotten. News agencies called her one of the most promising producers.

In August 2012, Ruby was honored as Best Producer for The Glamorous Imperial Concubine. In December 2012, she was named one of the highest-paid Chinese celebrities. She earned a lot of money through her own studio.

In August 2013, Ruby won Most Favorite Actress at the 8th Beijing Film Festival. She spent a lot of time preparing for her drama Singing All Along.

In 2021, Netflix bought the rights to Light the Night. This was a three-part series set in Taipei in 1988. Ruby was one of the producers and also one of the main actresses in this series.

In 2009, Ruby Lin started her own production company, Ruby Lin Studio (林心如工作室). This company handles all parts of her career, including acting, singing, and film roles. By 2016, her studio had two artists and one director.

Being a producer gives her more control over TV projects. She can oversee scripts, hire people, and choose the cast. Ruby said, "I just kept getting offered the same type of role. Being an actress, you cannot really do much. Actresses can only wait for the roles to come." She added, "Now I can choose everything myself... I feel much more in control over what I get to do."

Her first production was a big success. It won several awards, including "TV series of The year" and "Best producer." Ruby also won "Best Producer" and "Best Actress" awards for it. Even with her success as a producer, she says acting is still her "top priority."

I will be producing more and more but I still love acting so much, so that will still be my main focus. There is something wonderful about getting yourself in the head of the characters that you play and being able to perform for viewers. It's just that now I also get to create characters that I really want to play."

In July 2021, Ruby Lin's studio in mainland China closed its business registration. Since 2020, she has been based in Taiwan and moved all her operations there.

Personal Life

Ruby Lin dated Taiwanese actor Jimmy Lin from 1995 to 1997. They met while filming School Days. They later said that distance caused their breakup.

On May 20, 2016, Ruby Lin confirmed her relationship with Taiwanese actor Wallace Huo. They had been friends for over 10 years after working together in Sound of Colors in 2005. They reportedly started dating around Ruby's birthday in January 2016.

Ruby married Wallace Huo on July 31, 2016, in Bali. Many famous celebrities attended their wedding. They also had another wedding reception in Taipei on August 2, 2016. Their daughter, Amelia, was born in Taipei in January 2017.

In 2019, Ruby enrolled in a business program at Shih Hsin University in Shanghai. Due to the pandemic, she transferred to the Taipei campus in 2020. She graduated in June 2021 and received an award for Outstanding Achievement.

Charity Work and Endorsements

Ruby Lin is very involved in charity work. She supports many different causes.

  • In 1999, she helped raise money after the 1999 Jiji earthquake.
  • In 2003, she became a sponsor for a Vietnamese boy through World Vision.
  • Since 2005, she has been a spokesperson for a fashion company. She also set up a fund to help poor people in China.

After her daughter was born in 2017, Ruby became an ambassador for children's brands like Fisher-Price. In 2019, Nuna signed her as their first Asian brand ambassador. In December 2020, Ruby became the new spokesperson for Estee Lauder's Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Collection in Taiwan.
