Rum balls are a yummy sweet treat that taste like chocolate and rum. They are similar to chocolate truffles but are made from crushed cake or cookies. These small, round sweets are usually about the size of a golf ball.

You'll often find rum balls covered in chocolate sprinkles, shredded coconut, or cocoa powder. As their name suggests, they contain rum. Since they are not baked, the rum flavor stays strong. Rum balls are especially popular during the holiday season.

Where Rum Balls Are Popular

Rum balls are a favorite Christmas treat in many countries. These include England, Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United States, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Greece, and the Czech Republic.

In Denmark, people enjoy rum balls all year round. They are known by different names there, like romkugle, trøffel, or sputnik, depending on the area.

How Rum Balls Are Made

There are many ways to make rum balls. Recipes can be different from one region or family to another. However, all rum balls must include chocolate and rum. The other ingredients can change in type, form, and amount.

To make rum balls, crushed cake or biscuit pieces are mixed with fat and cocoa. A moist ingredient like jam or condensed milk helps bind everything together. Sometimes, other ingredients like nuts are added too. Once the mixture is firm, it's rolled into small balls and then coated with sprinkles or coconut.

Hungarian Rum Balls

In Hungary, rum balls are made in a similar way. They are usually rolled in sugar. Sometimes, ground walnuts and raisins are added to the mix. Some Hungarian rum balls even have whole cherries inside them. These are then rolled in coconut flakes and are called kókuszgolyó in Hungarian.

Rum Balls Around the World

Rum balls are quite similar to brigadeiros, which are a popular sweet from Brazil. However, brigadeiros are made using condensed milk as a main ingredient.

World's Largest Rum Ball
