Ruslan's Early Life
Ruslan was born in Uman, Ukraine, on November 4, 1980. His father, Yefim, was a guitarist and introduced Ruslan to music when he was very young. Ruslan started playing the guitar around age four.
When he was about seven years old, he switched to playing the piano. In 1990, his family moved to Israel. There, he kept studying piano at the Bat-Yam music school.
Around age 14, Ruslan found out about jazz music and loved it right away. By the time he was 16, he was a "wunderkind" – meaning a child prodigy – playing keyboards for a popular Israeli jazz fusion band called "Confusion." He toured Israel with them and played at the Red Sea Jazz Festival many times.
When Ruslan was 18, he tried out for the Berklee College of Music in the United States. He won a full scholarship to study there and moved to Boston in January 2000. While at Berklee, Ruslan became very interested in R&B, funk, and soul music. He played with local artists and became the main keyboard player at a club called "Wally's Jazz Café."
Ruslan's Music Career
Around 2004, Ruslan joined the band of famous musician Stanley Clarke. This was a big step in his professional music career. He then moved to Los Angeles, California.
Since then, Ruslan has traveled, performed, and recorded music with many well-known artists. Some of these include the Black Eyed Peas, Chick Corea, Kanye West, Josh Groban, and Seal. He has also worked with George Duke, Marcus Miller, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Ruslan released his first album, which was self-titled, on October 24, 2011. Famous musicians like Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, and George Duke were special guests on the album. Ruslan and Stanley Clarke produced the album together.
Ruslan also helps other young musicians. He is a board member of the Magic Music Foundation. This is a non-profit group that gives scholarships to music students all over the world. They help students no matter where they choose to study music.
