History of Russell Springs

Russell Springs was founded in 1865. It was an important stop called "Eaton" on the Butterfield Overland Dispatch stage line. This stage line was like an old-fashioned bus route. It connected the gold mines in Denver, Colorado, with Fort Riley, Kansas.

Travelers on this route often stopped at the natural springs in the area. They called these springs "Russell's Springs." The town was named after Avra P. Russell, who was a soldier in the 2nd Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. The stage line stopped running once the Kansas Pacific Railroad was built.

Russell Springs used to be the main town, or county seat, for Logan County. This lasted until 1963. There was a lot of disagreement about which town should be the county seat. In the end, Oakley became the new county seat in 1963.

In 1965, the old courthouse building in Russell Springs was turned into a museum. It is now known as the Butterfield Trail Museum.
