History of Russian Empire Football
The Russian Empire football team played its first unofficial game in October 1910. They won 5–4 against the Bohemia team. In January 1912, the All-Russian Football Union was created. This group then joined FIFA in the same year. FIFA is the main organization for football around the world.
The team's first official international game was at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. They played against the Finland team. Even though Finland was part of Russia back then, they competed as a separate team. Russia lost this first official game 2–1.
The growth of football leagues in Russia stopped when the First World War began in 1914. Some games that were planned for 1915 against Germany and France had to be cancelled. Many players sadly died in the war. Others left the country after the October Revolution in 1917. Later, the Soviet Union national football team was formed in 1923. FIFA saw them as the team that followed the Russian Empire team. Today, the team is known as the Russia national football team since 1992.
