Ruud Jolie (born Rudolf Adrianus Jolie on 19 April 1976) is a talented musician from the Netherlands. He is best known as the lead guitarist for the popular symphonic metal band Within Temptation.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Ruud Jolie grew up as an only child. He first started playing music on the keyboards. However, his real passion for music began when he saw a video of an Iron Maiden concert. This inspired him to pick up the guitar.

After finishing high school, Ruud went to a special music school called a conservatory. He studied jazz guitar there and graduated in 1999.

Before Joining Within Temptation

Ruud started his music career by playing with several local bands. He joined a band called Brotherhood Foundation, which played a style of music known as nu-metal. He stayed with them for two years.

In 1998, while playing at the "Dynamo" festival in the Czech Republic, Ruud met the members of Within Temptation. At that time, another guitarist named Michiel Papenhove was playing with Within Temptation, so Ruud didn't join them yet.

Later, in 2001, Ruud joined an alternative rock band called "Vals Licht" (which means "False Light"). This band was unique because they combined heavy music with Dutch lyrics. They released several songs in the Netherlands, and one of them, "Het Licht," became a top ten hit.

About a month after joining "Vals Licht," Ruud received a phone call from Within Temptation. They asked him to join their band because their guitarist, Michiel Papenhove, was leaving. Ruud said no because he had just committed to "Vals Licht." A few months later, the drummer of "Vals Licht" became very ill. During that same week, Robert Westerholt, a founder and guitarist of Within Temptation, called Ruud again. Ruud still turned them down because of the difficult situation his band was in. However, he offered to play as a substitute guitarist for Within Temptation until they found a permanent member.

Becoming a Member of Within Temptation

In the summer of 2001, Within Temptation had a concert in Mexico City. Ruud traveled with them as their substitute guitarist. This trip helped Ruud get to know the band members better, and he realized he really wanted to be a permanent part of Within Temptation.

When they returned home, the band's plans for a "permanent" guitarist didn't work out. Luckily for Ruud, Robert Westerholt called him a third and final time, asking him to join the band for good. Ruud finally said yes!

Solo Music: For All We Know

In 2007, Ruud announced he was starting his own music project called "For All We Know." He explained that he chose this name because it makes people think about questions that don't have easy answers. He said the music would be heavy and focus a lot on the guitar. He also mentioned it would be different from Within Temptation's music.

The first album for "For All We Know" was released on April 25, 2011. His second album featured guest singers like Anneke van Giersbergen and Wudstik.

Maiden uniteD

Ruud is also part of a special project called Maiden uniteD. This project started when a fan club for the band Iron Maiden asked Joey Bruers to create a unique show. Joey asked Ruud and other musicians to join him. They performed acoustic versions of classic Iron Maiden songs, which means they played them without electric instruments. The audience loved it!

Maiden uniteD is a project that brings musicians and fans together to celebrate music. They take well-known Iron Maiden songs and rearrange them in new and exciting ways. This gives fans a chance to hear the songs in a completely different style.

Musical Gear

Ruud Jolie uses several types of guitars and amplifiers. He officially supports Mayones guitars and uses their Regius models. He also plays guitars from Paul Reed Smith, Jackson Guitars, and Fender. For his sound, he uses Mesa Boogie and Diezel amplifiers, as well as digital sound processors like Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx II and Kemper Profiling Amps.
