Career in Comics and Toys
Ryan Brown played a big part in making the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles world what it is today. He worked at Mirage Studios, the company that first published the Turtles.
Working on the Ninja Turtles
In 1985, Brown helped create the look of the character April O'Neil in a special drawing. He later helped bring her to life in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comics published by Archie Comics.
For the main comic series, Brown worked as an inker. An inker is an artist who traces over the original pencil drawings with ink. This makes the art look sharp and ready for printing. He also drew over 80 covers for the TMNT Adventures comics.
Together with his creative partner Stephen Murphy, Brown helped build the world of the Archie Comics' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They even created a new team of heroes called the Mighty Mutanimals, who got their own comic book series.
Designing Famous TMNT Toys
Besides drawing comics, Brown designed many of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures for Playmates Toys. If you had any of the old TMNT toys, there's a good chance Ryan Brown created them!
Some of the famous characters and toys he designed include:
- Leatherhead
- Wingnut and Screwloose
- Ray Fillet
- Mondo Gecko
- Scumbug
- Hothead
- Scratch the Cat Burglar
- Farmer Mike
- Wyrm
He also created many other characters that became popular toys, like Monty Moose and King Lionheart.
Other Cool Creations
Ryan Brown didn't just work on the Turtles. He had many other creative projects.
Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa
In 1992, Brown created his own animated TV show called Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa. It was a fun cartoon about cow-like cowboys that aired on Saturday mornings on ABC. The show was so popular that it was also turned into an arcade game by the company Konami.
More Comic Book Projects
Over the years, Brown created other unique characters and comics.
- Hallowieners: In 1984, he came up with the idea for giant monster hot dogs. Mirage Studios published a comic about them in 1989.
- Bog Swamp Demon: This character appeared in several comics during the 1990s, including issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and his own series.
- Rion 2990: In 1986, Brown co-created a comic book that was inspired by Japanese comics, also known as manga. It was one of the first examples of an American comic made in that style.
Making a Difference for Artists
In 1988, Ryan Brown was part of a group of comic creators who drafted the Creator's Bill of Rights. This was an important document that aimed to protect the rights of artists and writers. It helped make sure that creators were treated fairly and had more control over the characters they invented.
In 2014, Brown appeared in the movie Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this documentary film, he talked about his experiences helping to create the world of the Ninja Turtles.
